Hi - I am looking for suggestions for a one night stay on Thanksgiving. Our flight gets into STT about 3:30 on Thanksgiving day. I get the impression that all/most of the STT car rental places are closed. So we could either stay one night somewhere on STT or take the ferry over to STJ. We've found a really nice villa that we'll have for 10 days on STJ so I was actually looking for something relatively cheap since it'll just be the one night. Oh, there are 4 adults and 2 kids traveling so I need privacy for the 2 couples (either private rooms or privacy within one place). I'd say my budget is $300 or less for all.

Some ideas were Best Western near the airport in STT, St John Inn, Maho Bay Camp or Concordia Eco-tent. I'm not entirely opposed to Maho or Concordia as it is only one night and I think my kids would love it (kind of Swiss Family Robinson if you use your imagination-haha). A condo would be great but I'm sure it will be unlikely for me to find a place for one night.

I'd really prefer to get to St John on Thanksgiving...just makes it feel like the vacation starts sooner. Also, does anyone know if everything is closed on Thanksgiving day?? Will we have trouble finding a place to have dinner? (I've been to St John a few times before so I'm familiar with things but I've never done an arrival on a holiday)

Thanks so much!!

You will have no problem getting to STJ on Thanksgiving and most car rental places will be open. I would just try and get into the villa on Thanksgiving and get your vacation started

Are you 100% on the car rental being open X ? For some reason I though they now close....hummm - I need to check for my own peace of mind 🙂

I know STJ Car rental is open on Thanksgiving. They only close for Carnival, Christmas, and New Years day.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I would love to be able to check into our villa on Thanksgiving, but unfortunately that is not an option as the villa is rented. That's why I'm looking for alternate suggestions.

We had originally planned to go from STT to Virgin Gorda on Thanksgiving and stay for 3 nights (In fact, that's what I have reservations for). Then we would come to STJ for a week. But I found out our villa was available earlier (except for that first night) so I started thinking about getting to STJ sooner and just day tripping it to VG.

I really do need to make up my mind... 🙂

OK I called around this morning and about 50% of the rentals I spoke to are open on Thanksgiving - I will post the list but I left it at the kiosk so it will have to be tomorrow (if someone does not throw it away tonight when I am not there 🙂 )

I have been to St Thomas twice for Thanksgiving, once we arrived on Thanksgiving Day, and I know that we arrived before 2 because we were flying USAir back then (why we don't now is another story). I can tell you that nothing was going on on the island, many businesses closed up. I don't know if they schedule that in advance or not, but maybe it's an island time thing I guess. Only one of the restaurents was opened at the resort on Thanksgiving day, including the bar at the pool. We had reservations for dinner and it was a fantastic buffet, nothing off menu that day for dinner. This was at Smugglers several years ago when we were staying at Renaissance Grand Beach, and it was packed with guests as well as non guests wanting to eat out for Thanksgiving dinner.

If I were you I would try and get dinner reservations. If your flight gets in at 3:30 by the time you get your bags or get settled, even close by the airport, it's going to be the dinner hour and I bet a lot of places will be closed or booked up, and hotel guests will have first preference for dining rooms so you may not get a table where you stay.
Enjoy your trip
