I want to leave from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 24, 2008 to go to Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands. I do not want to stay on the boat. I want to get off and island hop. Flying is out of the question. Boat or ferry or water taxi for me. I want to spend at least one night on each island. Can someone help me to go by boat from Florida to Saint Thomas and be able to come and go as I please? If there is a bridge that connects to Florida, I would much rather drive.

There is no boat ferry or bridge between Florida and the USVI. Perhaps you shoud do a little more research before your trip. What you are considering, even the island hopping part, is not feasible, for the most part, except by air. And very expensive.

Book a cruise. Different island every day.

Hang out at the docks and look at postings for anyone needing a hand sailing. Check the internet for sailing forums and post looking to hitch a ride will work for the trip. Check out Latitudes and Attitudes magazine and web site for postings on trips.
Hope this helps or brake open the pocket book.

You will need to drive to Miami as the bridge is there not Fort Lauderdale but with the cost of gas it will probably be chaeper to fly.

Pia I thought they moved the bridge to the Keys, It now goes Via the Keys to Cuba then to Haiti then to Puerto Rico then on to Calabra and then on to St. Thomas. They are now in the process of building one to BVI.

Here is a link to the Forum all in fun.

Pia:

They replaced the bridge last year with a tunnel.

Check the train schedule! I believe Amtrak is now running non stop from Miami to St. Thomas then one stop in St. John?!! Or the other option would be to wait for the Cubans to land and take the return trip to Cuba and then you could wait for the next boat from Cuba to the East End of St. John and camp out in Brown Bay!! Might be more expensive than flying though?!! I would check with the local smugglers before booking your flight. You definetly will not need a passport!!

Don't forget the zip line. It could be an option if you pack light, which is always a good idea anyway.

P.S. I'm pretty sure you WILL need a passport on the zip line.

At least if you take the train, the zip line, or work a cheap fare out with the local alien smugglers you won't have to pay $15 for your first bag or $25 for the second bag or $100 for third or more!! I still think the Amtrak non-stop is your best option!! The train drops you off down town at Caribbean Station. They have great customer service and even hand out Rum Punch when you arrive!!

atiller,

Have you checked a map lately? There is no way for you to drive from Florida to St. Thomas!

Your best bet is a cruise from Florida to the Caribbean islands or flying to st. Thomas.

If you are luck enough maybe you can rent a yacht with crew? Or have a friend that owns a yacht and crew!

Good Luck!

When checking on rental car insurance for STT I was asked if I'd be driving there from Florida. Maybe there is a bridge that exists for the geographically challenged?

Very few people would be moving a boat from FLA -USVI at that time 8/24 -- it is too close to the peak of Hurric@#e season.
