Good morning.

We will be visiting the STT island in mid July. I was wondering what should we do in the event of a hurricane forming and heading towards STT? We are staying in a villa rather than a hotel so we will be on our own and wasn't sure exactly what we should do.

I understand that if we are under mandatory evac we will probably be heading home on a plane, but what if it's say a Cat 1,2 or 3?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Ralph from the mainland

Just stay on top of the news and weather while you are here. generally these storms do not sneel up on you. If it looks like it would affect the island my sugesstion would be to get a flight out. Afterward there is usually a curfew and trees down etc. Not the best circumstances to vacation!! It is very rare to see any activity in July but the weather seems to be constantly surprising us!

If you do a key word search on both this forum and the relocation forum you'll find an abundance of information on hurricane preparedness which will probably answer most of your questions. I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it, just look forward to enjoying your vacation, thinking about whatever day trips you want to take and generally relaxing!

And hurricanes do tend to be sneaky and there's little opportunity to "evacuate" as the airports close down if a shift indicates an imminent hit. As Marilyn hit STT with such ferocity the night of September 15, 1995, we listened by candlelight (when the winds reach a certain intensity, WAPA shuts down) to the local radio station. As parts of the station's transmitters were being wripped away by the winds, the announcer was in a state of confusion as the National advisory was still saying that Marilyn was passing way South of STX. Obviously we knew this wasn't the case and the radio station suddenly went off the air shortly thereafter.

Don't worry about it!

I will be getting married in STT in July, 07. I am a little worried about the wheather but not much. I am more concerned about finding the right location on the island, any suggestions.
