It Looks like you guys at St John will escape at least the brunt of the storm. What's the mood on the island, festive or sober?

What about STT and STX?

STT report- starting to get windy with only a few sprinkles thus far. We took all of the exterior furniture in and tucked stuff away. Relaxing for the moment!

Hope things stay calm. We are due there 10/27 and would like a roof over our head, so hold things together. What ever the Island drink is, have one and relax.

Hurricanes can disrupt things even if they don't actually hit an island. Some of the ferries will stop running later today:

I talked to STX this morning...well, at noon island time. While we were talking you could hear the heavy rain start and the wind was blowing so hard it made talking difficult.......and then the power was gone. That's at a house right above Schooner....I'm assuming they're just hunkered down.

I've been watching the progression of the storm closely, live here in Louisiana but honestly am more concerned about what's happening in the islands. My daughter and I were in STT just last month and as always, it was a wonderful time. For those of you who are lucky enough to be there now or have the luxury of living there I hope you are safe and have all you need to get through the rough weather. My thoughts are with you all.

Cat 4 and growing . Where is the colder water that will die this baby down? Isn't it only headed for warmer water? Hang in there and keep safe!

Louisiana...didn't Bush just annouce a plan for Lousiana area and in particular New Orleans? It's possibly headed that way, but who knows where if it enters the Gulf?

an unprecedented event for Jamaica; direct hit with 150 MPH sustained winds [topping Hurricane Gilbert's 135 MPH winds [Sept. 1988] and Charlie's 100 MPH winds in 1951]... Population of Jamaica is nearly 3 million people; and is 49th most densely-populated country in world...

Some of you may be interested in reading hurricane reports from the islands from the perspective of one or more locals. Click on the island name on the right side of the page:

STT report: Fewer winds than expected, tho we did have some nice breezes! Hardly any rain all to even speak about! STX being closer, got more. Whew! Dodged it, Thank God!
Pray for those in Jamaica! They are in for a serious ride.

Thank goodness you were spared, USVI. I am sorry to hear about our friends in Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia and the damage they've sustained.
"Nearly 100 percent of Martinique’s banana crops and 70 percent of its sugar cane was destroyed in the hurricane, said Christian Estrosi, France’s junior minister for overseas territories."

Looks like Jamaica may take the brunt of this one - and now some predictions are saying that it could strike as a category 5.

Mexico also looks to be in the path.

Ill be praying for everyone in the Path of this MONSTER
They said this morning that the reconincance(?) Plane found hail around the eye wall
HAIL??? its unheard of in a hurricane.
My grandparents live in Brownsville TX which is in the middle of the Projected cone

Gobucs, is hail unheard of in a hurricane? That's interestng. I mean, I guess it would be strange to have hail land on a tropical island.

Reading the Jamaican press reporting that Jamaicans are not preparing properly, and the stores are reporting shelves remain stocked with emergency items, which are not selling as predicted. What are they waiting for? Are they really prepared?

Geoff and I were just discussing this. He said they've always watched the storms pass, only having 2 strikes in the last 60 years. Predictions sound devastating for them. Let's pray it stays south and makes a channel - keeping away from Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula (Cancun). Unfortunately, satellite images now show it passing directly over Jamaica - dead center - with an east to west path....the long way across.

From the National Hurricane Center.

Fizzlepoop...

Technical weather term used on the Weather Channel describing the the shot of their 'top dog' weather man dressed in full storm regalia standing on the beach, in the sun talking to sun bathing tourists.

Actually better for Jamaica if it goes north as going south would put them on the 'dirty' side. The bad part of all this is hurricanes are like a runaway train and once they get going nothing will stop them until it hits the wall. Even if it misses, Jamaica and the Yucatan, it's going to hit Mexico or somewhere on the US Gulf Coast.

Chris, I was reading that the Atlantic Ridge (whatever that is) is the wall it needs to slow down.....sounds like the Ridge is somewhere on the southern edge of the continental US.

Thanks for the info about the "dirty side" - I hadn't hear that. Why is it the dirty side?

.....a sharp turn would be needed, I guess.
