Hello,
we will be staying in Virgin Gorda (Biras Creek) and need to fly home from St. Thomas. We got nonstop flight from St. Thomas so I need a way to go on Dec 11 from Virgin Gorda to Tortola to catch a ferry to St. Thomas.
We flew once on seaplane and it was cool but I do not think there is a seplane service between Tortola and STT. Private water taxi asked $200 from Tortola!
I only found ferry from Tortola by Smith ferries for for $38 per person.

Is it correct? I would like a private boat but they are so expensive! We are only 2 people and need to catch plane from STTon 12:39pm. I am also considering spend last night in STT.

Any suggestions?
thanks

Considering that it takes awhile to get from Virgin Gorda to St. Thomas thru Tortola, you might consider spending your last night in St. Thomas. Try staying at one of the hotels near the airport.

Hello Vagabond,

You are suppose to get to the airport 2 hours in advance (since the airlines consider the VI international - this is what I was told a few weeks ago) so that means you have to be there at 10:30 for your 12:39 flight...

You could fly from Virgin Gorda to the St. Thomas airport - I believe Air St. Thomas offers this - not sure the price or the schedule. (340)776-2722 is the number.
The seaplane might be operating now to the BVI and if they are Virgin Gorda is an option and Tortola - so you might look into that too.

As for ferry service - you would be cutting it close for Virgin Gorda - Tortola-St. Thomas-taxi to airport... If you were able to catch the ferry that leaves Virgin Gorda at 7:50am it takes about 1 hour 15 to get to St. Thomas I think - and then a taxi... you might call the ferry to confirm its time on the date you need to travel and how long it takes with customs stop ect. And then see if it will work for you.

Otherwise stay at the Best Western by the St. Thomas airport and come over to St. Thomas the day before your flight and spend the night.

T hank you Islander and Dominic. Actually, I made a mistake, our flight is at 2:39pm from STT, on dec 11 (Sat). , not 12:39 as I said.

I contacted Smith Ferries by email and a lady Marjorie Smith replied that there is
a 7:50 am departure on December 11 from Virgin Gorda (Spanish Town) which will connect in Road Town with an 8:50a departure that will arrive St. Thomas at 10:00a. The cost per person is $38 one-way..... no charge for luggage.

So I am considering book it, she asked me to fax credit card authorization form to guarantee. Is it a norm to pay so much in advance?

Also, I remember many years ago we went to St. Croix and took a sea plane to St. Thomas and it was neat! I looked at Seaplane website and there is nothing which says that they fly to BVI now.

I am leaning towards to booking that ferry, for 2:39 pm flight I have plenty of time.

What do you think?

There is no reason to "prebook" a ferry trip between the bvi and the usvi...

Just get on the boat and go...
.
this is not rocket science ...this is just a ferry ride...

don't over stress or over analyze...

we do it every day...

Just give yourself enough time and relax and enjoy the trip...

Hello Vagabond,

I am not familiar with pre-booking or pre-paying for the ferry in general except in instance where you have a very large group or its a special event.. particularly 9 months in advance. I would recommend though that a couple weeks before your trip or maybe once in the BVI you give them a call again to re-confirm that the 7:50 departure is still operating (things could change in 9 months).

Have fun planning your vacation!
