Hubby & I are coming end of November with our snorkel equipment we purchased in the Keys. I have snorkeled only one time in my life....& that was after a couple ~cocktails~! I had a very hard time...I was very, very scared! It just seemed so un-natural to breathe while my head was underwater!

The question I have is....am I gonna be safe??

Exactly how safe is it for us to snorkel....when we have absolutely NO idea of anything we are doing!
We don't know any of the possible dangerous things we should be looking for.....just the pretty things....& we don't even know that they are!

For the record, I'm Lutheran. So I can say whatever I want about the Pope....and a bushwacker.

I think we should avoid religion.

I think we need more drink recipes.

I'm just trying t get to page 5 too.

Has anyone ever had a key lime martini? They are sooooo good!

No, no, no LLBL.....I am Catholic and I can say anything I want about the Pope and Bushwhackers (which by the way I was one of in my younger days - a Bushwhacker, not a Pope)....You are Lutheran and you can say anything you want to about Martin Luther and Bushwhackers.......

Oh, and while we are being politically uncorrect...I like the Dixie Chicks.

Well, I don't know about gas guzzling SUV's contributing to the degradation of the coral, but how about the fact that we're using up all of our renewable resources? THIS is the reason we should be looking at buying hybrids or an alternative fuel vehicle. But "Mark", you just keep on driving your gas guzzlers, your grandkids will be paying for it down the road.

Yes I have owned 2 Tahoes and a truck in the past years, but now we've "downsized" to more economical vehicles. Our next one will be an alternative fuel, tho, because I don't like having to rely on foriegn oil. I'm hoping that it will catch on, that in 10 years, we'll be "yellow". and believe me - to live in WV and NOT own a huge truck/SUV, I am definitely a minority!

OK we've solved snorkeling problems, urinary tract infections, global warming, coral degradation, and gas consumption, what else is there??

going for page 5!

Just wanted you all to know that I've enjoyed reading this hysterical thread!! Humor aside, I really did learn a lot about snorkeling (and picked up some great drink recipes, plus I won't pee in the ocean again!). I just counted and we leave in 48 days! Woo hoo! karrieb -- we are UUs too, btw. Have a great weekend everyone!

hilarious!

I hadn't clicked this thread since page 2 because I figured "how much advice can they give on snorrkeling?" - But, tonight something made me ask "now, what on earth are they talking about on this thread and how much snorkeling advice does one person need???"

and here y'all are talking about religion and bladder infections - whilst the environmentalists are pitching their thing - and someone is calling in their OB-GYN for forum support - and cocktail recipes are being exchanged.

LOL - what on earth??!! This place is a regular hodge podge!!

I just made up a drink in a martini glass. I put in limeade and UV blue raspberry flavored vodka and the color is just like the Caribbean blue sea! It is yummy too. I can't think of a name for it. It's weird to type when you are buzzed...

My mom is a UCC minister, my husband Catholic, I haven't decided yet. But we all should pray that our vacations aren't rained out!
The topics on this thread have been interesting and I like being a part of it.

Yea! Page 5!!!

How about naming it a Snorkelers Delight in honor of the topic that started this whole thread 🙂

Yeah, maybe Duffy's will serve it in a clear snorkel, so you can see the color-------just suck in - don't blow out.

1) 12 days to go.............can't wait!!
2) Don't care where the Pope pee's
3) checking out biodiesel alternatives, but haven't made the leap yet
4) favorite drink while on STJ is lime and coconut at Zozo's
5) Greek Orthodox
6) have pee'd in the ocean since I was a kid with no problems and will probably continue
7) like the name cranilla-thrilla best for a new drink

I absolutely loooooove this thread and I'm adding my 2 cents to try and get it to page 5! Lets keep going 🙂

Terri..what's in a Key Lime Martini?...My Key Limes have just turned yellow, I don't have enough for a pie but a batch of martinis would be great!! I've been following this thread for the past couple of days and it is a hoot!..As for myself, my version of snorkeling for dummies involves my raft which I bring from home...It's the $ 5.00 Walmart version that has about 18 holes that will hold a cocktail or beer nicely....sooooooo,..if you're like me and can't get enough snorkeling done and like to enjoy your adult beverages, then you can flop sideways on the raft, park your drink/camera , put on your mask and go...I highly recommend it.. It's my version of the Willie T!!... We'll be arriving on the 31st.. 24 long days to go.. Halloween on STJ!!!! Yeah Babe...
Cheers

Unfortunately for your key lime use, the drink doesn't have much lime juice in it. You will have to make a lot of them. Can I come over?

Key lime martini
For 1 drink:

1 oz Stoli Vanilla
1 oz Dr. Vanillacudy's
1/2 oz sour apple schnapps
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz pineapple juice

Garnish with a graham cracker crust rim and a slice of lime

It tastes just like key lime pie!

Back to the original topic. Snorkeling in the early morning is the best. We like to go early, then take a break, have lunch and snorkel a little in the early afternoon. We then hit happy hour, (it was usually at Woody's on STJ) which runs into dinner and then pretty much pass out at 9-10 pm. I never have snorkeled drunk. It just didn't seem like a good idea. However a drink or 2 might help relax an anxious person. I am worried that with bringing my kids ages 16 and 11, that we will never get out there early. They like to sleep in.
I have another good tip for snorkeling and hiking on vacation. If you are in pretty good shape, it is all a lot easier. I am not a fitness fanatic, but I do try to exercise 3-5 times a week. I really notice a difference with my stamina for hiking, swimming and snorkeling. The best part of some of the reefs are out at the end of the cay. You have to swim further and be able to swim back. I also think that eating healthy most of the time helps too. Of course you go off of that when you go on vacation! 🙂

We will be in STJ 6-8-07 to 6-15-07. I know it's a long way away and I'm crazy for getting so excited this soon. I have to talk to someone about it however. I think I'm driving my family nuts!

Nice day in SE Wisconsin today.... hey....

I created a lower alcohol, cheap person's version of this drink and it tastes incredibly close to the original. I am not sure about how much of everything that I put in however.

Apple juice
vanilla extract
limeade
lime juice
vodka

Graham cracker rim

The color kind of looked like polluted lake water so I added a drop of green food color.

Ok, I'm game for page five- if you're on STJ during the last week of November, look for a short (5'2.5") pale faced woman with shortish straight dark blonde hair, more or less petite if you don't count the cellulite, wearing relaxed shorts and a Tshirt and alot of sunscreen with a 6' tall, baldish, grey haired pale faced guy with a bit of a mid-life midsection bulge and the same kind of clothes, both with sandles and without an attitude, and looking really happy and relaxed to be back "home" on STJ. So that's us, what about the rest of you snorkling, environmentalists (and proud of it)?
