We are going to be in St. Thomas for the day (cruise ship) on Feb 21st. We have been to St. Thomas probably 5 or 6 times and did the usual stuff there - snorkeling tours, etc. Have never been to St. John and need some advice as to best way to get there - seems to be taking the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay - and how to spend our time in St. John - have been told to go to Trunk Bay. What is the best way to get to and from Red Hook and about how much should it cost? Suggestions as to how best to spend our day in St. John?

There are excursions to Trunk Bay that will pick you up directly at the WICO dock, drop you off in Cruz Bay, put you on a safari bus and take you to Trunk Bay for some snorkeling. One price takes care of all of the arrangements. Check with your cruise ship to see if this excursion is available. These tours normally are only 4 hours long and may be the reason you are looking to arrange this yourself.

To arrange this yourself you would need to take a cab to Red Hook ($26 round trip per person), take the ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John ($12 round trip per person), take a cab to Trunk Bay ($16 round trip per person) and a $4 admission fee to get into Trunk Bay. This will allow you more time to enjoy St John, but keep in mind the excursion will get you back to the ship on time. Enjoy your vacation!

It has been my experience that you want to do an excursion simply because of the time factor. They are usually short only giving you about 2-3 hours or so at Trunk. However getting back and forth from the pier to Red Hook can be a nightmare if you are pressed for time. Its a great option when you only have one day in the VI. The excursion will also give you some time for downtown shopping if you so desire, good mix all wrapped up in a day.

I know someone who just did this excursion set up through their cruise ship. They went into town, did some shopping, got the round trip ferry, cabs, and trunk bay admission for about $75pp. You don't get too much time to actually do anything at Trunk bay though, maybe 1 1/2- 2 hrs then time to head back out
