WE want to do St. John on our own. How much time should we allow to get back to the ship?

Hello,

Which ferry are you taking, Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie.

Red Hook ferry is a shorter ferry ride, longer taxi ride from/to dock.,

Charlotte Amalie ferry is a long ferry ride, shoter taxi ride.

If you are taking the Red Hook ferry I would say catch the ferry back that is at minimum 2 hours before your must be on the ship. So if you have to be back on the ship at 5pm, then at miniumum take the 3pm ferry back to St. Thomas. That would take about 20 minutes for you to get back to St. Thomas Red Hook and then it would take about 30-40 minutes to get from the dock back to the ship considering there may be afternoon traffic, it might be a little shorter if no traffic. So it might take 1 hour commute, that is why I suggest taking the ferry that gets you there with 1 hour to spare. If you take the one just one hour before then that won't work if you are a few minutes late.
