We're planning our first trip to STJ. On our return there are very few aadvantage options open and they all leave St Thomas at 7:35. How many minutes does it take to get from Red Hook to the Cyril King Airport? Can we take the 6 AM ferry from St John to Red Hook and get to the airport in time to make a 7:35 flight or is this cutting it too close?

No way you will make it - sorry 🙁

I frequently fly back to the States (I live on St John) and the earliest I can make is the 8:35am AA flight to Miami. If you catch the 6am ferry you will be at the airport at the earliest 6:50am - not enought time to check in, pass through Customs and Immigration and through Security. 3 weeks ago when I flew, the wait time was 1 hour and 20 mins from arriving at the airport to being at the gate (for American anyway)

Hope this helps

Pia

Some people in the same situation opt to stay overnight at one of the two hotels close to the airport - Emerald Beach Resort (www.emeraldbeach.com) or the Island Beachcomber Hotel (www.island beachcomber.net)

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Why stress yourself? Take the later AA flight to MIA and relax and enjoy the last day on the islands. Stay at the MIA hotel if needed (usually $120/nt) and wake up and catch an early morning flight to your final destination. The MIA airport hotel has a pretty good restaurant also... Just a thought.

I'm with Eagle,
Slow down. Plan ahead, don't cut corners. it always works out best. Make your life a little more "stress free". That way, you have the best of memories.....That, is what vacations are for.

I don't think she really has a choice. From what I'm reading, American Airlines is only offering her one flight option with her award miles.

Also, while I do like the idea of taking in my last day there, it's often more bitter than sweet. Alas, an early departure might be a less emotional departure. Waking up, hopping on the ferry, and taking off on the plane are all the goodbye I need on my last day. Hubby and I always try to spend our last full day on the island alone...and we stay on the beach until we can't stay there anymore! Then the next day we're all business.

Either way, to get a great deal on airfare, sounds like Deborah isn't getting a choice in the matter. Staying on STT her last night seems the only viable option...or a private water taxi....would they leave an hour early from STJ?

Deborah, we've never had a problem with our miles getting out on the, I believe AA flight to Miami that leaves at about 4.00 pm.

Two flights to Miami, one at around 8:30, one later in the day. The early flight she is referring to is on the Eagle. They do not open the doors to Customs until 6:30. The counters I believe open at 5:45. When I drop guests there for early departure at 6-6:30, there is usually a good sized line, as they are checking in the Miami flight as well as the SJ flight.
