We are planning to come down soon and rent a boat. I'm not sure how close St Thomas is to St John's as we would like to go there via our rental boat. I have seen anywhere from 1/2 mile to 5 miles as the distance. Anyone got a handle on exactly how far it is?
Thanks.
St. John's in Antigua? Pfff! Waaaay too far to go in a rental boat! (Har-har!)
St. John (no 'S') is listed in the St. Thomas /St. John This Week magaine as three miles from STT. But, in my opinion, it looks more olike a half mile. It's really not far at all. VERY easy to do in your rental.
I don't know exactly how far, but I agree with Marty that it doesn't see as far as three miles. From Red Hook to Cruz Bay looks more like a mile or so. I see locals on jetskis going back and forth. It's very close.
Hello,
It may seem closer but it is around 3-4 miles. Very doable by boat, lots of folks do it daily. It's a great day.

Ok, dragging out the dividers and my trusty Imray-Iolaire nav chart, I see that the shortest distance between St. Thomas and St. John is 1.9 nautical miles between the tip of Cabrita Point and an unnamed point on St. John (just south of the tip of Steven's Cay).
From the dock in Red Hook to the dock in Cruz Bay is 3.2 nautical miles.
And just for fun, switching charts to answer the original question as phrased, it's approximately 215 nm from Red Hook to St. Johns (on Antigua).
As I tell my wife: if you really didn't want to know, you shouldn't have asked an engineer! 🙂
Thank you Regan - a complete answer, gotta love it. 😉
