Hi,
I posted below about taking a day trip to Virgin Gorda, maybe Jost Van Dyke, but my partner heard great things about Tortola. I don't see Tortola offered on many of these day sails --New Horizons and Limnos both seem to do the Virgin Gorda, Jost trips.

A few questions:

1) If you could do just one day trip, would Tortola be what you'd choose? What are the benefits?

2) There are ferrys that leave from St John to Tortola, so we could definitely take one. But then what do we do when we get in the center of town? Will we be able to figure it out on our own, or does it make more sense to go on one of these day charters?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. We're leaving in 48 hours (Yeah!) but my head is spinning a little...;)

If I had a choice between spending a day on water snorkeling versus a trip to Tortola for a land excursion, I'd opt for the water based one..but that's just me.

It is NOT a shopping mecca - there are several stores in Road Town, and Cane Garden Bay is a beautiful beach, and there ARE many cool snorkeling spots there, but IMHO Tortola is better explored by land when you have more than one day to do it in.

This is my opinion only - Gimme the Willy T 😉

Thanks for the advice...so where would you go for water snorkeling...? You'd do a daysail, but to where?
And is there a daytrip that will take me to the Willy T??

Lori Beth,

I am a fairly new participant on this board, but have been on another board for many years. I posted something lately on the other board on our experiences with day trips - so please excuse the link to the other board. http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=481533&an=0&page=0#Post481533 - It is just to hard to relink all the photos.

I hope the link does not upset old timers on this board. Really just trying to share information.

We took the ferry from St John to Tortola a few years ago. Went through customs and got a taxi at the dock. Taxi driver was very knowledgeable and took us where we wanted to go and made some good suggestions. We're Parrotheads, so he took us to a bar at a marina (can't remember the name) where he said Jimmy was inspired to write about their cheeseburgers. We also did Cane Garden Bay and snorkeled a bit. As with everything else in the world, your expectations will determine your happiness with any excursion. We had a great time, and our cab driver came back and got us in time to make the ferry to St. John. We also had some time to look around the shops and visited Pussers - especially fun since the one in St John closed. We liked Tortola and plan to go back in the future.
