*I've never been to St. John and am thinking of going with my husband in late Feb or March. We want a smallish hotel preferably on the beach. We like to snorkel and fish and go to local bars/restaurants. What do you recommend?

In St. John there are no smallish hotels on the beach. The major hotels are the Westin and Caneel Bay. They both are not small. You will find very few places right on the beach as St. John is mostly national park. Caneel has seven beaches and is absolutely lovely but also pricey. The beach at the Westin is not quite as nice but you wouldn't want to confine yourself to a hotel beach anyway as there are so many beautiful beaches on the island.
There is a place called Gallows Point that is not actually a hotel but condo units. It's on a beach but that is rocky. The plus side of Gallows is that it is close to town.

Hello,

You can stay in smaller inns or a villa, rent a car and get around the whole island, enjoying the different beaches. Camping is another option for being very close to a beach or on a beach. Which do you think would most interest you?

For "smallish" I might think about renting a cabin at Cinnamon Bay. The campground has a restaurant, store, watersports, and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world just a couple hundred feet away...and I think there are even a few right on the beach. Rent a Jeep and Cruz Bay is only about 15-20 minutes away. 🙂

Actually, I'm thinking of doing this on my next visit. You may have to reserve a cabin well in advance though.
