Hello,
Can anyone comment on the Hotel Caravelle? i.e. size, cost, amenities, cleanliness, etc.
Thank you
I stayed there three weeks ago. It is a medium-sized older hotel on the Christiansted harborfront. I believe that their current summer rates are $115/night for ocean view room with king bed.
Pros: The location is excellent. Within walking distance to numeorus bars and restaurants. The view from the ocean front rooms is fabulous. The owners are super sweet and the staff is very friendly and accomodating. The price is reasonable and the rooms are clean.
Not so Pros: The rooms and their amenities are not very modern. So if you are looking for a room with brand new furnishings and decor--this is not the place.
Because I was going on business, I would have preferred greater comfort to compensate for not being in my home. But I loved the proximity to Thai Garden and other fine eating establishments. Also, there is a lot of fabulous shopping in downtown Christiansted.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay and will probably stay there again if hubby and I make a trip to STX together. However, if I return on business I am inclined to sacrifice location for comfort and elect one of the resorts.
I've stayed there many times - it's my home away from home. As Onik'a mentioned, the owners and staff are fantastic and the location is superb. It is right on the waterfront, has a lovely pool and poolside area, there is a secure parking lot (a rarity in downtown Christiansted) and the views are terrific. There are computer ports in the rooms for business travelers and there is a computer in the lobby to check e-mail, flights, etc.
You are within three blocks in most directions of the superb restaurants, several clubs, fantastic shopping, numerous museums and historical sights, the best can rental on island (Goldmine), the seaplane, and the ferry that will take you to the lovely beach at the island in the harbor (a 90 second trip that runs throughout the day).
As Onik'a also mentioned, this is not a high end resort. That said, the rooms are nicely furnished and cleaned daily, the maids are helpful, and I would place the decor on a par with a Holiday Inn. If you've seen a brochure or the Hotel Caravelle website the pictures represent the rooms fairly accurately. Since I tend to use my room only for showering and sleeping the Caravelle far exceeds my needs - the beds are comfortable, the rooms (and sheets) are clean and the staff treat you like family.
