Does anybody know a decent hotel by the San Juan Airport? We've got an overnight layover to deal with on March 26-27. Our STX/SJU flight lands at 8:45pm and then leaves SJU at 8:10am the next day so we're obviously not looking for frills.

I know this is a crappy itinerary but it was the only way to use FF miles. I'd rather pay for an extra day in STX and another in SJU than pay American Airlines $1600 for 2 tickets.

AA has yet to offer any sale fares for March. But if you have a Citibank AA MasterCard (mine is a business card), they're offering reduced mileage awards to STT and STX through the end of March. It cost me 22,500 miles per ticket instead of the usual 30,000 miles. I just booked mine yesterday.

If your travel dates are available on the AA web site under Mileage Awards reservations then they're good for the reduced reward.

I go to San Juan a few times a year for business. Work the island and then down to St. T for a couple of customers and then to St. J for a week each time.

I stay at one of the hotels on Isla Verde which is the closest area with decent hotels by the airport. All the hotels are "high season" right now and usually pretty booked up. I have stayed at the Embassy Suites and Marriott Courtyard (just renovated and really nice on the beach)...both have the usual SMALL casinos if you are into spending more money.

I usually get a pretty good rate at the Hampton Inn and have stayed there a dozen or more times. It is a nice hotel with a very good pool and pool bar/grill. There is complimentary continental breakfast in the AM and a lounge bar is open in the evening. The hotel is right across the street from the Ritz...I go through Ritz if I want to run or walk beach. Hampton is Hilton property so if you are member of Hilton program you can get points.

Cab from airport to Isla Verde about $11.

There are a couple of local hotels that are less expensive than the chains on Isla Verde but I have not heard great things about them. Kinda get what you pay for...

There is another Courtyard in Miramar which is "downtown" San Juan by the old original airport. That location usually has great prices compared to the other hotels. Miramar is about 5 miles from airport and taxi ride is about $15. You are then in walking distance to Old San Juan.

Safe travels!

We are staying at a Best Western right at the San Juan airport. I was told it is right in the airport. We are paying $155/nt in June. I don't know anything about this place. We are just looking for a place to crash.

We stayed at the hotel in the airport. The entrance is across from the American Airlines ticket counters. It is clean and very handy. They also serve a continental breakfast. The rooms are small and basic, but clean and perfectly adequate for an overnight stay.
