Hi!
My fiance and I are coming to STT 2nd week in June for our honeymoon and staying at Sugar Bay Resort...on the all-inclusive plan. Has anyone stayed here or heard anything about the resort? I've read some really bad and equally good reviews about the place...and hoping for the best! Also, are taxi's the best way to get around or would it be better to rent a car for a day or 2? One other question, what are some great places that we can check out for things to do or other places to eat/bars to check out??? Thanks for any info!! : )

Sugar Bay is a nice resort and like others receives mixed reviews. I wouldn't have taken the AI option as hotel food is hotel food and SBR is no exception. AI generally isn't popular here as there are so many restaurants in many different price ranges within easy reach of wherever you stay.

SBR is excellent as far as location is concerned and within very close proximity to the best beaches on St Thomas (Coki, Sapphire, Smith Bay Park and Secret Harbour) while beautiful Magens Bay is about a 10-15 minute easy drive from there. The beach at Sugar Bay is OK but nothing compared to what's just a five minute drive away! It's also a short drive to Red Hook from where you can take the inter-island ferry service to St John for day trips and, further afield, the British Virgin Islands. For a day trip to St John you can either take the passenger ferry or, better (and as long as you don't rent from Hertz who doesn't allow their vehicles over there) pack up all your gear and a cooler in your rental vehicle and go on the car barge. If you want to go to the BVI either on the ferry or via charter you MUST have a passport. Red Hook also boasts a variety of bars and restaurants and night life as well as several stores.

You can find the ferry schedules and rates under "Quick Links" top right this page. Taxis charge per person and the fares add up very quickly. Just to get into Red Hook from SBR will cost you minimum $5 per person each way. Renting a car is by far your best option.

If you go to the "St Thomas" bar at the top of this page you can scroll down to find a ton of suggestions of things to do but three things which should be on your agenda are (a) a trip to St John; (b) a daysail.; and (c) a visit to Magens Bay with a stop on the way out at "Udde Delite" for one of the best milkshakes ever.

That should start you off, anyway!

Take a daysail on New Horizons and snorkel at Honeymoon Beach. It is positively beautiful and isolated. We were the only two on the beach that day and even tho married 16 years we felt like we were on our Honeymoon. Congratulations. The beach bar on St. John is a great hang out too.

Suggestions:

Definitelty spend a day on St John walk around Cruz Bay / take taxis to beaches / snorkel everywhere - ferries go every hour from St John (reserve a dinner spot at ZoZos and watch the sunset - ask for a bar seat up top) - eat lunch at Rhumb lines
Take a Day sail to Jost Van Dyke and Soggy Dollar (need passport)
Take a power boat day trip to Baths/Virgin Gorda (need passport
