I was wondering if it was leagle to hitchhike from Coral Bay to some of the beaches. We are going to ST. John and are on a tight budget. We dont want to offend anybody but if it would be easy to do I thought we could shave our transportation bill a little. We still would rent a car but mayby for 1 week instead of 1/12 weeks.

Hitchhiking is very common and well-received here. Just don't use your thumb! They'll look at ya like you have three heads! haha! Here we point with our index finger in the direction we want to go. What part of MI are you in? I moved here from Lake Orion (about an hour North of Detroit, just North of Pontiac) almost 8 years ago and wouldn't go back on a bet! Haha!

I see it all the time on STT and STJ. I usually pick up females or couples.

I always get a kick out of people still pointing when I come by...on my Harley! Haha! What? Do they think I have an extra helmet in my pocket?!? Haha!

There's a public bus, VITRAN, that goes from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay, and costs no more than $2. Good way to see the island cheaply. You can ask the driver to drop you off at any of the beaches along the route. In St Thomas, there are also "dollar" safaris and public busses, but they actually cost $2.

One caveat on the VITRAN, though...their 'schedules' are very loose. What I mean is that if it's supposed to be somewhere at 1 p.m., you can expect it sometime between 11:30 and 2:15. (Keep your finger out while you're waiting! Haha!)

Hate to be a kill joy but if you take the bus to Coral Bay there are only beaches at the end of the trip. There are no beaches on Centerline Rd. The ride is somewhat scenic but the bus goes rather fast for the road conditions and only stops at certain bus stops along the way. Take a pillow the ride can be bumpy and the seats are hard!
