Can anyone recommend good hiking trails for us 40 somethings on our first time to St John? We're photography buffs, and would love to hike some trails (have done so Stateside but nothing too rigorous.) I dont want to have to bring the iron lung 😛 Thanks for your suggestions.
The Turtle Bay trail at Caneel Bay, (You need to check in at the front desk and get a pass if you are not staying there.) The Caneel bus driver can show you where it starts. A couple of short climbs, but plenty of rest stops. Some great views! Also the ruins across the street from Cinamon Bay, as well as Anaberg.
I would take the Reef Bay trail with the Parks Department. They taxi you from Cruz Bay to the trailhead and escort you DOWNHILL to Reef Bay, stopping at the Petroglyphs and Sugar Plantation Ruins along the way. After that, they ferry you back to Cruz Bay. Tremendous views and photo opps.
Takes about 2-2.5 hours if memory serves. You can contact the Parks Department in Cruz Bay (opposite Mongoose Junctin) to get the details.

Hi! I think you and I have covered this before, but i have another question. we are pretty active hikers. Would we want to do the reef bay hike solo, or is it better to go with the Park Dept.? Is it really that bad to hike back? Thanks!!
Hello Donna
If you are fairly fit it makes for a nice day trip (~5 hours). I would suggest you carry your snorkeling gear so you can cool off and relax in Reef Bay before making the return trip. That area is totally isolated. Make certain you carry enough water.
The only 'hassle' with doing the trip yourself is finding a parking spot if you leave it too late. Depending upon interset that day you may have some difficulty. Signage is not too good and the trailhead/parking area comes up pretty quick as you get moving along windy Centerline Road. I missed it first time and ended up turning around 🙂
The trail to Ram's Head (just beyond Salt Pond Bay) is gorgeous and not terribly taxing. We are not hikers and we hiked it in July.
We were tired (and thirsty), but not exhausted. If you go, make sure you bring some water!
