I've read that some of the nice beaches in STJ are short walks/hikes to reach. Do we need sneakers or hiking boots or are good, secure sandals okay?
Thanks
Kim

I only hiked one trail on St John...from Cruz Bay to Caneel. If other trails are anything like this short one...bring a good shoe. It's very hilly with somewhat steep paths going up or down, especially if you branch off the main trail to hit a beach along the way or go to higher grounds.

I'd say bring a decent pair of sneakers at least...and remember to carry water. 🙂

Sandels are not suitable for hiking to any of the beaches unless it is from the road to the sand. We used sneakers and had a great time. If you take the Reef Bay hike, make sure you consider the Parks Service return boat trip unless you want to hike back up the hill. The Parks Service runs this return only certain times of the week so you must check with them.
The book "SJ Off the Beaten Track" is worth it's weight in gold.

Hello Kim,

I think a good comfy pair of sneakers is good.
