We will be staying in a villa in the southeast side of St. John from 9/16-9/23. My wife is not as physically able a hiker as I, and she thinks I should not hike alone. So if anyone out there is looking for a hiking partner anytime during that week, or knows how I can link up with anyone, please let me know. I may get my wife to take advantage of the guided Reef Bay hike, since it is down hill. Hiking to a remote snorkeling location would also be fun.

What? All these readers and no takers?!! You must think I am an old geezer that will slow you down! I am a 47 year old engineer who hikes 11,000' peaks here in Salt Lake City. When I was on St. John in 1990, I had just one morning to hike, so I walked from Cruz Bay to the juncture with Bordeaux Mtn. Road, and on my way back to Cruz Bay I did the Reef Bay Trail round trip. I would like to hike all the trails on St. John at least once during the week I am there, and my wife won't be able to do a lot of them. But I also want to make her happy and not do at least the longer hikes alone. We will be staying over near Salt Pond Bay. I'm going to do Ram's Head every day as a warmup.

Mekohagan, Not to worry! If you do the Reef Bay Hike with the NPS you will meet about 30 fellow hikers! (Look for my trip report later today.)

If you change your trip (hahaha) to early Nov, I'll go! Hubbie has a bad knee and I'll be in exactly the same situation. I hear the Reef Bay trail is good- if you haven't been to STJ before, its very hot with not exactly wonderful hiking temps due to the heat/humidity so that's why you may not be hearing from anyone plus you're going in hurricane season so there are that many fewer travelers.
Hike away! Its the best!!!! (I do sections of the Appalacian Trail out here in the east myself)

My wife won't be waiting for me. I got us a villa (Sea Spirit), with a gazebo, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. My wife will be content for a couple of hours at a time reading a book in the gazebo while I do a hike that she can't do. We are celebrating our tenth anniversary and her birthday during that week, so I won't be disappearing for long on those days.

See my second post. I was on St. John in May of 1990. The daytime temperature there won't bother me. It was 99 degrees here in Salt Lake City yesterday. I do expect the humidity to bother me, but I need some kind of challenge. Our honeymoon 10 years ago was supposed to be on St. John, but two hurricanes took care of our accomodations and the airport. I am watching the national hurricane center website intently. If we are meant to be there this time, the weather will stay away.

sheesh, what's this about old geezers? I'm a 52 year old geezer, last summer I spent 2 weeks backpacking in the Sangre de Christo Mountains in New Mexico. Mt. Mitchell, hiked with a 50 pound pack (and I'm 151 pounds) was a hair over 12,000 feet. I'll be hiking on STJ in November, am really looking forward to getting into some of the more out-of-the-way locations

Cruz to Bordeaux and the Reef Bay trail (round trip) on the way back to Cruz...all in one morning?

Lauriebugg is right,,,you're too fit for anyone. Definitely an A type personality.

Based on your ability to do all that in one morning my one comment would be to do it again. Only this time stop every now and again to see what you are hiking through. You're on vacation...not in training. It takes my family all morning to drive from Cruz to Maho having to stop, look around and take in the island.

I do not resemble that! I have never considered myself a type A. Plus my wife won't let me! Hiking at high altitude gives me an advantage when I hike at sea level. A 1200' foot climb over five mile from Cruz Bay to Bordeaux on St. John is like walking five miles on level ground here at home. When I was on St. John in 1990, I only had a morning to get out and see the island. I had just arrived from 12 days on St. Croix helping with the sea turtle conservation project there. I couldn't go home without experiencing St. John, even if just for a short while. When I got married, I knew that St. John is where I wanted to take my wife for a honeymoon or vacation. Since the hurricanes took care of our honeymoon plans, a vacation there has been in our plans for a long time. Now we are finally going to do it, weather permitting.

Mekohagen - My post was intended in the spirit of flattery and fun. It's a compliment in a joking matter that I said you were too fit for me. And your wife waiting for you is a compliment in her love for you - in the same way I wait for my husband for when he returns from his marathon training.
