Have a reservation with Hertz for 12 days in March 2010. Anyone had experience with them recently? Comments? It was kind of scary to read the bad comments about Thrifty which is normally very good in the US.
Can't wait to be leaving the snow for a couple of weeks.
I know Hertz wont let you take your vehicle over to St John, where most others will.
We rented from them March 09 and had no problems. We had a really nice new 4 door Jeep and we only paid for and requested a 2 door. I do wish they would let you take the jeep to STJ, but they won't. This was the reason why we went with Dependable in December, which also was nice, but it was hard to get used to not having power windows and locks! 🙂
We rent from Hertz all the time (3 months or longer). (We did use Avis once)
Have never had a problem with Hertz.
People at the Hertz counter are terrific!
If you're a AAA member Hertz gives you a 10% discount.
how is Budget - for Jeep?
We've always used Dependable and have always been very happy.
We reserved a SUV 2 1/2 weeks in advance of our arrival at the Havensight cruise port. When we arrived there were no SUVs or jeeps reserved for us. Only a Mitsubishi Lancer along with a take it or leave attitude from the agent.
No jeeps had been returned in time for us (why bother with a reservation system then?!?) and the Lancer was apparently the only car in the lot. The agent's attitude was not empathetic or understanding from my viewpoint. Once there is any hint of conflict or negative vibes, many of the locals simply shut down. This is not the first time I've experienced that. Just so you can frame this is the proper context, I was not abusive with the agent although I was disappointed and let her know that. I wasn't going to let it ruin my family's day!
By the way. If you're in town for only 1 day DO NOT attempt to take the Red Hook car ferry unless you're willing to lose up to 3 hours waiting around on both sides. The staff on the car barges were also less than tourist friendly in my opinion.
syncopation: I'm actually surprised that you decided to rent a car and take it over to STJ on the car barge as this is something not generally recommended to someone coming in on a cruise ship for just one day. One of the biggest drawbacks is that if (and as you experienced) there is a delay on the return ferry, the ship will leave without you if you don't make it back in time. Conversely, if you go on a tour sponsored by the cruise line the ship WILL wait. There sometimes are delays on the car barge but they're usually pretty dependable and, as of this week, one of the boats which had been out of commission for quite some time is now refurbished, back up and running which will ease the load off the other two operators.
Was this your first visit to St Thomas and did you do a lot of research? We locals aren't all grumpy even when visitors can be (unwittingly for the most part) very irritating! I hope the rest of your cruise was enjoyable.
