We'll be cruising to St. Thomas, Charlotte Amalie and would love to go to St.John to spend on time on Trunk Bay. There my be 10 of us.
I would like to know the best way to do this day excursion. Cab to Red Hook then Ferry to Cruz Bay cab to Trunk Bay. What are the fares for the cabs. Do they charge less for children.
Also if we took the ferry from Charlotte Amalie is there a cab ride involved there or can we walk to the ferry from the ship. I know that the ferry ride is longer from Charlotte Amalie but if that ferries time is close to leaving when we get off the ship wouldn't we be using the same amount of time as if we had to get a cab to take us to Red Hook to get the ferry from there.
I'm trying to figure out the time and about how much this trip is going to cost each of us.
Thanks.

Joe,
Since time will be of the essence, my advice would be to plan your tactics around the fastest way over to St. John. For a complete listing of ferry schedules, check out the "Getting There" link on the St. John page of this website. Print that out and have it along so you know which direction to head when you step off the cruise ship. You're correct about the length of the ferry rides, it's about 30 to 45 minutes (depending on which boat is running) from Charlotte, and 15 minutes from Red Hook. Takes about 30 minutes by taxi to get to Red Hook from the cruise ship docks (depending on traffic). Everything depends on something else, doesn't it?

Walking to the ferry dock from the cruise ship is not really an option, it's quite a hike and would take too much time as well.

I'm not sure about cab fares for the two destinations, I'm sure somebody else can chime in with that info.

You may also want to consider visiting one of the other beaches like Hawksnest or Cinnamon instead of Trunk. They are equally beautiful (I think), and may well be far less crowded.

I would suggest to pick up the ferry within walking distance from the ship and shop along the way . The ferry ride is longer but it is beautiful. You can take the dollar bus from cruz bay and see the whole island in 90 min. In a large group of 10 everyone is wanting to do different things. My suggestions if you take the ferry to Sj.

shoppers only ....take the bus ride for a buck to see the Island and come back and shop at Cruz bay or shop along the way in Coral Bay

shop and beach... take a cab to Cinnamon bay, shower there and come back to Cruz bay to shop close to the ferry so you catch the ferry.

You can't miss St. John It is beautiful

Hello,

The cab from Havensight (where most ships dock) to Red Hook - about $8 a person one way, ferry $3 a person one way from Red Hook, Cab to Trunk Bay $4 a person one way, entrance fee to Trunk Bay $4. Children under 6 years old pay half price on cabs; and are $1 each way on the ferry if under 12 years old.

Cab to town from Havensight is $3 one way.

There is a comparison of the two ferries; cost, time, taxi on the cruise guide on this site; bottom of the page; copy and paste this link:

If possible.....take the downtown ferry to STJ and a cab from cruz bay to your beach.
Otherwise, a cab to redhook and ferry to cruzbay and a cab to your beach is the only other way. The downtown ferry might be a little quicker and cheaper but if you have to wait a few hours, then obviously it isnt worth it unless you wanted to shop while you waited.....

I would not suggest taking the bus on St John- it's route is over Centerline Rd which is not the scenic route unless you want to see Coral Bay and don't care about see all of the National Park Beaches. You could contact Patrick Hendrickson - a very reliable taxi driver to give you an island tour or take all of you to any of the beaches, you can call Patrick on his cell phone at 340-514-2731- island tours of St John run $16 per person RT - have fun.
