I am deciding whether to get a rental car on St John or at the airport- I realize from reading back posts there are advantages to both and that only we can decide, but I want to make sure I have the right information to make my decision.
2 adults and 2 kids under 12 and 3 pieces of luggage.

So the taxi to Red Hook is 11$ each plus 6 for bags plus tip, so about 55$, so 110$ for the cab alone to and from the airport.
The Passenger Ferry with luggage is 18$ each way, so 36$ round trip for family of four....

Total is roughly 150$.

IF we rent from Dependable or Budget at the airport, we would only pay for the car ferry cost which is 40 -50 Roundtrip ,depending on th carrier.

Am I doing the math right ? Is it really 100$ less to rent on St Thomas?

THanks so much for any insight....... I really appreciate it ,

Also, if you can use a Taurus or similar front-wheel drive sedan, the rental agreement will be significantly less by renting on St. Thomas. That's what we do. We don't stay in a villa needing 4 wheel drive and the Taurus works for us. We spend $319 for 8 days rental (including taxes and fees) plus $50 for the car barge total. That's through Budget who does allow rental cars to be taken to STJ. On St. John, it's roughly $475 for the same 8 day period for a 4 passenger Vitara plus the $110 cab/ferry fee to rent. A jeep on St. Thomas will cost nearly the same as on STJ (to compare apples-to-apples).

However!!!! If budget is not a consideration, then rent on STJ for all the great reasons others will give you! (It just sounded from your post that budget is a prime consideration).

Good Luck - Have Fun!

Thanks for your input, I cant believe cabs and ferry adds up to make the cost so much more.
We will need a 4wd for our villa, but with the jeep prices being the same, I think , we will rent on st thomas and stop at Cost U Less for groceries for the week and save even more there..
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts,

Just make sure you can make the last car barge I don't know what time your flight is but we had to let the car at red hook one time because our flight was late and come back the next morning to get it. .
