Hi all,
Once again I have another question and thought that with all of the knowledge on this board someone might have the answer.
My son and his friend are currently serving in Afghanistan and want to travel to STT to stay at our condo. They will be traveling around Europe and would like to fly directly to the islands from there. I think that the BVI's have direct flights from London, does the STT airport also have direct flights? Would it be cheaper to fly into the BVI's and then take the ferry over? What island is the BVI airport on?
Thanks everyone!
Molly
I would think major carrier to the US (JFK, EWR, MIA, ATL) and then a connecting flight to STT.
IAMolly, we have friends in London that visit twice per year. They fly a lot in their jobs so they're very familiar with playing around with the airline system to get the most cost efficient flight. They have found that no matter how you cut it, it's always cheaper to fly from London to the continental US and then to STT (versus from London into the BVI and then take Liat to STT). They normally fly thru New York City, to Miami (or Atlanta) and then to STT. I've often wondered (but not asked them) why they don't take a direct flight from Newark to STT. Seems like that would be easier than multiple connections once they've entered the US. Anyway, hope this helps.
You cannot fly into the BVI from London. You may be able to get to St Maarten, Antigua, Barbados, etc and then take LIAT, but it does usually work out cheaper to go to JFK or Miami and then AA to St Thomas.
EE is correct. The airport on Beef Island, Tortola, isn't equipped for jets so flying into the BVI isn't an option.
British Airways flies direct from Heathrow or Gatwick to PR with connection to St Thomas or else you can do the alternate route via BA to Antigua and then trust on Liat to get you from Antigua to STT, bearing in mind that LIAT stands for, "Leaving Island Any Time" and you might end up staying overnight in Antigua (happened to my niece a few years ago!) Would also suggest you do a google as Branson's Virgin Air and a couple of others have in the past offered deals on UK-STT direct flights. They seem to come and go so it's something you have to monitor. Cheers!
Check out Madrid to San Juan.

Just recently flew Iberia from Venice to San Juan, via Madrid. Madrid is a hub for Iberia and they have flights into San Juan on at least Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesday the flight goes into the Dominican Republic and then American Eagle flies into San Juan and maybe other locations.
Just thought I would post this helpful website that a friend told me about. It is:
www.igougo.com
Like I go , you go Anyways, you type in where you are traveling and you can check which websites you want it to check like (Expedia, Travelocity, Hotwire, Cheap Tickets, etc.) A whole bunch of windows will start popping up from each of the sites and you can compare them all at once without going to each individual place. It also does hotels and car rentals. It has been very helpful to us so thought I'd share it.
Molly,
I just checked on Kayak.com and used Frankfurt Germany as a departure point. Without knowing the exact days or time period it is hard, but usually when soliders get RR they end up in Germany.
US Airways from FRA to STT was $1100 round trip
Unfortunately it departs one day and you arrive the next
It was like 25 hrs to get there with layover in Charlotte, NC
The return also through CLT was only about 15 Hrs
Good Luck
London (Heathrow)/STT Round Trip......using www.kayak.com
October
Mid week: AA $700.
Weekend: AA $749, CO $764.
Note: 25 Hours/15 Hours
Wow,
Thanks for all of the advice! I've done a little more research with all of the great information that you have provided. The cheapest that I have found so far is for him to purchase round-trip tickets from Amsterdam to New York. His friend is from New York so this works nicely. Then fly to STT from New York. Thanks so much for the help everyone.
I guess that I assumed wrong that there would be a direct flight from the British to the BVI's.

Just back from Amsterdam a couple weeks ago
A great place to get stuck if you miss your flight
TomB,
When my husband and I were in Itlay last December our airline Alitalia was having troubles with a buyout. They cancelled all flights out of Venice and rerouted us through Amsterdam, try as I might, they wouldn't let us layover for a day or too, bummer.
Anyone who enjoyed the 60s and 70s would understand my post - I think you are in that group
Anyone before or after are clueless – even though they understand everything
Just ask them
