I've signed up for 5-day kayaking/camping trip that leaves from Cruz Bay on St. John at 8 a.m. May 29. But now I can't find anywhere to stay the night before (May 28) that is relatively inexpensive ($150 or less). Surprisingly, many places still have 3-night minimums.

Anyone know of an inexpensive hotel in Cruz Bay or even Red Hook (St. Thomas) that will let me reserve for 1 night on Memorial Day weekend??

Wow - when was that?

In 1978 it was called the Frenchman's Reef and I think it was a private hotel. It was Marion Barry's favorite hang out. He always use to go when it snowed in Washington. It was great watching the blizzard on TV with the city shutdown and then they would flash to the next story of Marion on the Beach. I think he was also looking for snow.

Never knew it was a Holdiday Inn. - Marriot owns it now right?

Okay, it's still the Windward Passage but it is in the Holiday Inn chain. To me it's still the Caravan Hotel! The original Holiday Inn was next door in Berne's Alley!

But in the late 70s- early 80s the Reef was run by Holiday Inn. It was a big hangout for Dallas folk. Usually the hotels are owned by one entity and someone else manages them. Marriott currently has the management contract for the Reef, for example.

Is the "original" Holiday Inn still there, Ronnie?
