I have coverage with Blue Cross and Blue Shield I was wondering how the coverage is in St. Croix and St, Thomas. Also I was just wondering about the quality of heath care in general.
Thanks
Hello Bobb,
Will you be vacationing in St. Thomas & St. Croix, or are you moving?
--Islander
vacationing for now. We will be in St. Croix for about two weeks in January. We are slowly thinking about moving. I am employeed with the government and I am looking for a job at a slow and cautious pace
I also have BCBS, I think that they cover any medical expenses that are incurred while on island but I would check directly with them first. When we were renovating our unit last summer our electrician went to a clinic in Red Hook and although he did have to pay out of pocket for his visit he was reimbursed when he returned home.
Another interesting fact, our sons' girlfriends flew down during our renovation and one of them came to me crying about her lost conteception "ring" (the Nuvaring or something like that). She had the idea that we were in a totally foriegn land, I simply corrected her and told her to call her doctor and have him call in a prescription to the local pharmacy in Red Hook. No problem, she had it in 10 minutes. Thank God, I just turned 40, grandchildren sound great but to feel young and be called "grandma" could be a conflict in my life.

That's hilarious Molly! I do enjoy a chuckle at the end of the night and that was a good one!
That said, I once in a while need a prescription antibiotic - call a physician friend in NY and he calls in a scrip for me along with a few refills so I don't have to go through the arduous pain of going to a physician here (and paying through the nose when I've no health insurance.) The hospitals here certainly do have their ups and downs. They've unsuccessfully tried to eject me from this planet twice in a quarter century...
Bobb,
On St. Thomas there is Schneider Regional Medical Center, you can read about them on their website at http://www.rlshospital.org/.
And on St. Croix there is Juan Luis Hospital and Medical Center, http://www.jflusvi.org/.
There are physicians in private practice on both islands in various specialities. Some specialities are not available. You can pull up the USVI yellow pages on-line, search for physicians and look over those pages, they are categorized by specialities. http://www.viphonebook.com.

Peebles on Tortola scared the bejeezies out of me....I could not get out of there quick enough...
The price was right...$84 for 2 EKG's...IV fluids...etc...BUT they also tried to take me for an xray that was scheduled for another pt, they tried to give me a large syringe full of stuff that was ordered for a different pt, and then they tried to keep me over night after the Dr. had already told me I was being discharged. As soon as my 2nd set of lab work came back, I was out of there...Regardless..
I am an RN so that is scary stuff. Thankfully I questioned them or I would have rec'd the above mentioned things. I just say this to tell you to be involved in your care and don't be afraid to ask what each thing is for, why you are receiving it, etc...
