Heading to St. John May 14-20. Staying at a private villa overlooking Cruz Bay with its own pool.
Never been to St. John.
We have rented a jeep for the full week. We love to snorkel and love to hike as well. We also like to sail so are considering a full-day sail trip - recommendations?
Can someone give me some "must do's" activity-wise?
Also, we enjoy great food and since we are from New Orleans we are a bit spoiled in that department. 3-4 best places to eat - we don't mind driving...
Any help would be appreciated.
Jim
Ten Tables in Cruz bay. Chef Scott Bryan voted 2005 chef for 2005.
Been to new orleans and love their Food! Ten tables will not disappoint.
The desert Blueberry Bread pudding with carmel and chocolate sauce
was yummy. If you like rack of lamb it's his signature entree.
Good service and great food. The restaurant is small so make reservations. (340-693-8708)
Also a new restaurant (couple of months) Astro Bistro in coral bay.
Vie's Snack Shack for a wonderful island lunch. She is located on the East end of the island. best conch fritters, garlic chicken and pineapple or coconut tarts. She is closed Sunday and Monday.Get there early 11:30- 12:00. She has a beach also. Good snorkeling.
Have a great trip.
Reef Bay hike is a must. Petroglyphs are cool. Bring lots of water. Waterlemon Cay is a must do for snorkeling. Brown Bay hike is good, and you can snorkel there too. Skinny's has good atmosphere and people watching, and great bergers. Have a great time whatever you do!
I'd suggest getting a guidebook--see top of page--Off the Beaten Track is good, as if Feet, Fins, 4WD. Snorkel at different beaches, take one of the hikes, get to the different areas of the island. The further you get from Cruz Bay, the fewer people you'll find--on the beaches, in the restaurants. We stay over on the Coral Bay side. Take plenty of time to do very little---nap, float, look at the night sky, listen to the waves, tree frogs, donkeys, roosters. just sit and savor how beautiful it all is. When we're on STJ, we eat at laid back restaurants rather than fine dining spots. We like the Lime Inn, Fish Trap, Morgan's Mango in Cruz Bay. In Coral Bay, we like Island Blues, Shipwreck, Sweet plantains (I'm kind of burned out on Skinny's). We always like to get some local food and Sogo's is a favorite for dinner in Cruz Bay, Miss Lucy's in Coral Bay.
Don't worry about missing the really good stuff, it's all really good. Put your watch away, settle into Island Time and just enjoy a stay in Paradise.
One more thing:
On Wednesday night go to Fred's to hear Inner Visions. They're a really good local reggae band that have been together for years. Seeing them at Fred's is one of the highlights of a trip to STJ for us.
Where and what is Fred's? I've never heard of it.
Jim, We've been back from our vacation on St. John for a month now and are already planning our return.
Just last October we were in Nawlins... we loved Cafe du Monde, Upperline, Bayona -- but Jacque-Imo's was the best.
On St. John, these places ain't cheap, but the food will awaken your senses. Check out Asolare, The Balcony and ZoZo's in Cruz Bay, Chateau Bordeaux at Bordeaux Mountain, and the reasonably priced Miss Lucy's past Coral Bay and before Johns Folly.
For a jumpin' hamburger joint with really affordable prices and cold beer, check out Skinny Legs in Coral Bay.
Each beach became my new favorite after each visit. But my most favorite beach, Salt Pond Bay, has new competition, Waterlemon Bay, where you can practically see schools of fish swimming while you're standing on the shore. And look out for the family of sea turtles grazing in the sea grass.
Have fun! We are jealous.

Fred's is a bar in Cruz Bay. It's across from the Lime Inn. I first saw Inner Visions there in the mid-80s and some of the same guys are still in the band (some of their sons are with them now). It's a real sweet night there when Inner Visions plays. It feels like old Caribbean. It's also kind of strange to walk by in the daytime and try to grasp that it's the same place where there was so much magic the night before. We keep a real loose schedule on STJ, but that's one thing that we plan around.
