I did it!! I moved to St. Croix, I love being here! I have met a few people, however, it seems like I make the people mad here for some reason. When I ask questions, people are often abrupt and immediately say they don't for can't speak english. I am an American, I have been told that the local people are not too fond of us, but sometimes the attitude is palpable. Is there any advice some of you transplanted Americans may be able to give me?
I don't want to offend anyone so any help would be appreciated.
This really belongs on the relocation board, but it's a problem for some tourists as well. Do you always start the conversation with Good Morning (Afternoon, Evening); ask how the person is and really listen to the answer before you start with your questions? A little common courtesy goes a long way. I have run into a few people who respond rudely anyway, but there are rude people everywhere. I spend my time on St. Thomas, not St. Croix, but I imagine the same rules apply.
You don't give us much to go on, but I'll take a stab. My advice would be to stop talking and asking questions. Find a bar in your neighborhood. Preferably a beach-bar, somewhere that has a local following. Go in the late afternoon. Sit at the bar, tell the bartender "good afternoon" and order a beer (or iced tea, makes no difference) and nurse it. Listen to the conversations going on around you. Pick out a customer or maybe the bartender to chat up. Tell them you just moved here. Then stop talking again. Let them ask you questions -- they will. Be laid back, relaxed. Take it slooooow.
Edited to say that this is really Linda J -- forgot to log him out and log in.
