Hello
I will be going to St. Thomas next week. I don't see mentioned anywhere if there are accommodations for the handicapped on the island.
Can a walker, wheelchair, or motorized scooter be rented? I don't want to bring any of these items with me if It can be avoided. I have a bad back and can only walk for short periods. I can use a wheelchair at the airport. I will be renting a car. I had hoped something would be available if I wanted to do a day of shopping.

Thank you!

Havensight Pharmacy rents medical equipment. They don't have their own web site, but there are pages for them on the sites of others. Here are two:

Not sure about rentals - here are some resources you might try:

Doctor's Choice Pharmacy (Wheatley Shopping Center, across from Roy L. Schneider Hospital, Sugar Estate. 340/777-1400.

Medical Arts Complex, off Rte. 30, 1 1/2 mi [2 1/2 km east of Cyril E. King Airport. 340/774-8988).

Havensight Pharmacy (Havensight Mall, Charlotte Amalie. 340/776-1235).

Kmart Pharmacy (Tutu Park Mall, Tutu. 340/777-3854).

Also wanted to mention that you will be deplaning via a stairway outside the terminal on the tarmac and boarding again the same way (there are no jetways on STT). Inbound, it's a bit of a walk from the plane to baggage claim area. Your airline can probably make other arrangements for you to deplane with some kind of a lift if needed but I wanted to mention the situation so you are prepared.

Secret harbor had a few units and even a wheel chair that went into the water. There are some villas as well.

Hi JE-

I work for a non-profit organization that serves people with disabilities, so I am a little in tune with the needs of people who use wheelchairs. One caveat to you- St. Thomas is not very accessible. The sidewalks and streets are crumbling and narrow, and I saw curb cuts that dropped three inches. Also, many places are reachable only by steep, narrow staircases, so be careful when you are out!

Hope you have a wonderful trip and don't encounter too many problems!

Much love, Heather
