Good Morning!
I'm making my maiden voyage to St. John in two weeks with my family -- I can barely contain myself!! One of the things we desperately want to do is take a boat trip to Jost Van Dyke, and it looks like there are a number of boat companies that can take us. Here's the situation: One of my family members is handicapped -- he has one arm and one leg, but is able to get around well on crutches. After trading emails with a couple of the boat companies, it sounds like he could use a dinghy from the boat to shore, but he would not be able to climb the ladder to get back into the boat upon his return. Are there any boat companies that go dock-to-dock from St. John to Jost Van Dyke? If not, does anyone know of a private boat operator who we could hire for the day? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Your best bet is taking the ferry. There is a dock in Great Harbour that you could use in a private boat and taxi to Soggy Dollar. But for comfortability I would recommend the ferry rather than a boat tour. The sailboats you have to balance yourself fairly well and you have to watch out for lines. Plus the ferry is much cheaper.
Aqua Action Dive center in Secret Harbour on STT specializes in handicapped snorkel and dive tours. They taught a paralyzed from the waist down (parapalygic?) person how to scuba dive.
I hope this helps and have fun. Jost Van Dyke is definitely worth the trip.
