Hi! Some friends and I are visiting St. Thomas in May and plan on buying some groceries as our hotel room has a kitchen (Point Pleasant). Suggestions for grocery stores that may be on the way from the airport to the hotel would be greatly appreciated. Stores that don't charge an arm and a leg for basics would be great.

Thanks!

Amber:

We stay at Point Pleasant, also.

Convenience.....Marina Market in Red Hook...I always shop there so comparing it with other places would be difficult for me.

However, to give you an idea of prices at Marina Market (Week of March 1, 2006) Dozen eggs $1.89, Bread $2.00, 12 pack of Coke $3.99, Box of cereal $3.99, 1/2 pound butter $2.49, Bananas $.89/lb., rum $3.95 bottle, ice cream 1/2 gallon $4.99. Other items were just a bit more expensive (pennies) than back home. I understand that the meats & seafood are more expensive there, but I hear they are of good quality. One Super Market is located at the TuTu Mall and another one just up the road from Red Hook.

The reason I stess convenience is that after a day of travelling to STT I don't really want to "waste" time looking to save a few dollars on a weeks supply of food. I'd rather spend my time looking at the incredible view that Point Pleasant offers.

Just my "two cents".

Have a good trip.

F.I.

P.S. Remember to bring or buy coffee....you do get a complimentary package with your suite, but that's just for one day.

Hey FI,

Thanks alot for the info! The prices seem very reasonable (we live in Chicago), thanks for the examples. I totally agree with you about searching for a bargain, we will actually just need breakfast and snack food, lunch and dinner we'll eat out. This is my second time to St. Thomas (my husband and I we're married at Frenchman's Reef), so I'm really looking forward to showing my friends around!
Thanks for being helpful!

Sincerely,
Amber

While you're there try a sunset cruise on the Fury...leaving from the Marriott...340-643-7733...tell Capt Mike that the Future Islander sent you. When we were there (earlier this month) the price was $50. each......all the Pain Killers (or other drinks) you can drink + food. I thought it was a pretty good bargain, since pain killers are typically $7. each elsewhere. Watching the big cruise ships coming out of the harbor was awesome.

Marina Market is your best bet, close and relatively reasonable. There's a bigger place west of Redhook on 32, better selection but the prices are higher.

Hello Amber,

Being from the Chicago area also, I think you'll find STT prices, resturant and grocery, fairly close (no huge sticker shock) to Chicago. We spend two week a year on STT and shop at Marina Market and the Food Mart,(mostly snacks, water, pop). And if you ask around a bit you'll find good resturants with resonable prices.

Enjoy STT.

Bring back some warm weather please 🙂

Thanks a bunch for all of the info! We'll definitely be doing our "shopping" at Marina Market.

On Island Time-- Hopefully we'll start seeing some spring like weather this week! I am SO looking forward to St. Thomas though! Thanks!

If you ask the taxi driver I'm sure he or she will take you the route which will pass by Food Center on the East End. It's a very large and well stocked supermarket. It's where I do most of my grocery shopping. Tuesday and Wednesday seem to be the best days as far as being well stocked. Marina Market is good as well, but it's much smaller and has a smaller selection, but it's good for it's deli/bakery and meat department.

Amber,

The weather guys are talking 50's-60's by this weekend...yeehaa, I'll take it (for now). Today rain and 40's 🙁 Can't wait to be able to sit on the deck sipping rum drinks :). When do you leave for STT?

We'll be driving from the airport, which should prove very interesting with 4 women in the car . Does anyone have an address for Marina Market? I have all my Mapquest maps ready for the beginning of the trip (to hotel from airport and back again) but should have one from the airport to the grocery store. We plan on stopping at the store before we head to the hotel (Antilles Point Pleasant). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey Island Time--
We leave Ohare May 4th at 6:45am and land in STT at 1:45pm, barring all delays, etc. I cannot wait to get out of this dreary place. I haven't had rum since we were there 2 years ago but I'm sure we'll enjoy our fair share of "Happy Hours" and not so happy mornings! We're all super excited!

I get such a kick out of the fact that Coke, cereal and ice cream cost MORE than the rum!

Thanks for the grocery prices!! I was worried about how expensive food was going to be. I live in Los Angeles, and the prices quoted are actually less than what I pay here (except for the rum!!).

Are grocery prices about the same on St. John??

Hi Amber
You don't need the address for Marina Market. It's directly across from American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook. Address don't really mean anything here anyway. It's also just to the east of Red Hook Plaza which is the other big bunch of shops and restaurants across from American Yacht Harbor.

Amber, forget map quest as I've found errors on some of them, when you get your car they will give you an excellent map and also, take or pick up all the information booklets at the airport, they also contain maps, especially the shopping ones! The larger yellow This Week guide has a list of the cruise ship schedule, very important!
