Can someone please recommend the best place to go grocery shopping on St. John. I was thinking about having our villa pre-stocked but I don't mind doing my own shopping. Won't take me too long since we only plan on making breakfast/lunch. We'll be going out to dinner every night. Would appreciate recommendations. Thanks!

Starfish Market is the closest to a state-side grocery store. Dolphin Market is right in Cruz Bay and is convenient if you want to walk from the ferry. We like Pine Peace for the best prices on Cruzan and staples. Lily's and Love City Market in Coral Bay are fine.

Cheers, RickG

skigirl,

We were just on STJ for the first time a couple weeks ago. We went to all the markets that RickG mentioned except Pine Peace. With the buildup online here about Starfish Market, I expected more from it. It's advantages are that it is larger than the others, so it carries more stuff, and is more convenient if your villa is on the South Shore.

We rented a Jeep Liberty from Courtesy Rental. They picked us up at the ferry dock. When we left Courtesy's lot and turned to go up Centerline (our villa was closer to Coral Bay), we stopped at Dolphin Market for our initial supply of groceries. Dolphin Market is just a short block from Courtesy on Centerline. Lily's on the Coral Bay side was cramped but did have a number of upscale items. Love City Market in Coral Bay was essentially a convenience store with minimal selections.

Does anyone know of a grocery on STJ that carries cream of coconut (Coco Lopez, LaPreferida, Pepe Lopez)? We plan on making some painkillers next week on island and can't bring it down in the carry-on. Thanks!

Thanks for your responses. Very helpful. We will be staying off Gift Hill Road in Virgin Grand Estates. By the responses, sounds like Dolphin or Starfish Market will be most convenient.

You can't go wrong, Starfish or the Dolphin. The Starfish is the most like continental U.S. grocery stores. As far as the other post re: painkiller ingredients, do not worry -- you can buy everything in abundance on the island.
