We are coming to St John for two weeks!! I can't wait. We usually bring some staples from home.....coffee/tea/ some snacks, etc. I find it so expensive to food shop and the produce really isn't great! Is it worth the trip to St Thomas to shop for two weeks? Is is any less expensive and will I find fresher food? Where shoud we go? I understand why it's expensive, I'm just CHEAP and looking for alternatives. I can't live on pain killers alone.........I don't think!

Any input is appreciated!

The way I look at it, so what if a gallon of milk is twice as much? How much milk would you have to consume (or orange juice) to make that much difference that you would save hundreds of dollars? If I'm spending $3000-3500 for the weeks vacation, a couple extra bucks for milk etc is a drop in the bucket. But to me - vacation is all about picking which restaraunt to eat at that evening. Yeah, we may snack for breakfast or lunch, but I'll buy most of those snacks when I get there. Its VACATION! I do not cook on vacation 🙂 I'm not a great cook, and food is ALWAYS better when someone else cooks it for you! Hey this is all just my opinion.

Well, the nice part about bringing your own stuff aside from saving some cash is that you ensure you will eat what you want. I'm not sure about STT, but STJ doesn't always have every little thing I might need in order to prepare a meal. I'd rather ensure quality by bringing my own stuff than wing it and see what's available when I get there. Normally I would agree that vacations are about eating out; however, when I'm on STJ, I love nothing more than cooking an amazing dinner while watching the sun go down and smelling the island air. There is something really nice about coming home to the villa after a long day at the beach, drinking something "rummy" and making a faboo dinner....especially when there's a large group to feed.

TRLK, Cost-U-Less is not hard to find, but not visible from the road. Have you seen the signs for the Home Depot? If so, that is where the Cost-U-Less is - same place. You'd make that left at the Havensight Wendy's and then the right at the Payless....then follow around til you pass Randy's Bistro. Look for Home Deport on your left and Cost U Less will be up there.

Do I know road names? Of course not! 🙂

mfinn, shipping is something I've often considered. But, I've hear such horror stories about boxes getting lost or destroyed in transit....often arriving without their contents.

I recall someone (maybe on the relo board) wrote that they shipped items down in a cardboard box. The box got lost. The person filed a claim. The box was recovered - well, the LABEL was.....the rest of the box was destroyed and the contents gone. They shipped him his label back....like "here's what's left of your box" - recovered!

Ugh!

Others seem to have good luck. If you try it, please let us know.
