What does one do for food on the islands? I tried using google maps to find grocery stores but not many listed and having never been there I don't have a sense of distance. I'll be having an extended stay on St. Thomas for work and am wondering also if there are open air markets that sell food.
Also, are there any LGBT hangouts on St. Thomas?
Look forward to meeting the locals!
It's been awhile since we've been down and the ole memory isn't that great so can't give the names. But.... There were two pretty well stocked Grocery Stores in Cruz Bay when we were there a couple of years ago. Well stocked but on the expensive side.
There are plenty of supermarkets and smaller grocery stores on St Thomas. The larger ones are CostULess, Plaza Extra, PriceSmart, Pueblo and Food Center. There are also roadside stands selling produce. You won't be wanting for anything but will quickly discover that sometimes you have to go to a few places to find everything you want. Adaptability is the key!
We just came back from St. Thomas on Sat, there are a couple places you can shop, On Rt. 32 there is a Food Center, in Red Hook next to the Total gas station in the shopping center there is a small grocery store and there is a Kmart on Rt. 38, found that to be the cheapest place to buy alcohol to take home. The prices of food is somewhat higher then here but it depends on what you are looking to buy, a pack of bacon at the grocery store in Red Hook was $9.00 but at the Food Center is was only $6.00. Have a good time!
Food Center and Marina Market are both more expensive than Plaza Extra or CostULess on the majority of items. I find the best liquor prices at the latter also. KMart has a limited liquor selection and I don't find their prices generally lower.
What STT Resident says is true on STX also. I've done my homework and Plaza Extra can't be beat for price and selection when it comes to booze.
On STT, I think only A.H. Rise has a wider selection.
I found this online phonebook for the islands, seems very easy to look for what you might need.

Wow this is a great feature and resource, thanks for the heads up!
Also, there's a lady that does your shopping for you and will stock your hotel room/villa/house....great service...I've used her often when I just didn't have the time: Grocery Goddess
