marina market in red hook is a good place to stock up on groceries/booze. their deli sandwiches are particularly tasty. many prices a bit higher than in u.s., but low booze prices make up for it!

Lori:

No the prices for groceries are not "super" expensive. Marina Market in Red Hook has prices on average 10 - 15% higher than on the mainland. Not bad considering the selection they have and being located on an Island.

If you have a car, I would suggest going to K-Mart in Charlotte Amolie to load up on some food items and booze. There is another place that some folks on this forum mentioned but I can't think of the name right now (its something like cost-U-less???..... someone help me here).

You can stock up on some items at these stores and then go to Marina Market for their excellent selection.

Besides KMart you might try Plaza Extra at Tutu or Food Centre down the road towards Compass Point for your basics. These are closer to the "super market" setups that you are used to in the states. Marina Market tends to be more expensive than the last two places. We save Marina Market for the gourmet items, cheeses etc. Another pricey but good choice for gourmet items is Gourmet Gallery in Havensite.

Lori from Chicago,

We live just out side of Chicago in Northwest Indiana. If you can afford groceries in Chicago 🙂 you wont have a problem on STT, prices are a bit higher but if you check pricing at the above mentioned stores you'll do allright. There is also a market acroos from "Bottoms Up" can't think of the name of it at this moment (help?)

Food Center is the one by Compass Point and across from Bottom's Up. I shop there to "fill in" what I can't find at Plaza Extra, Cost U Less and the local corner markets. Food CEnter almost always has what I am looking for.
Liquor prices are reasonable and to me not worth an extra trip to K Mart to save a buck or two.
For fish and veggies, try a short hop down to Smith Bay early on the weekends and catch the Frenchies bringing in the catch for the day. Worth the early morning trip!
