Hi everyone! I just love this site. We leave in just a few days for the Virgin Islands, and I have spent countless hours on here looking at awesome advice.

A question about grocery shopping....

We fly into St. Thomas, spend 2 nights, then go to Tortola for 4 nights and then on to St. John for 4 nights. Our plan is to eat cereal, fruit, etc. for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and eat out for dinner every night.

My question is should we buy everything at the Cost U Less on St. Thomas and transport it to the other islands or should we shop on each island? I have heard they are so much cheaper, and we do need probably 5 cases of water for our trip. How much of a hassle will it be to carry all our food on the ferry?

Thanks a million for your help!

:@)

I would shop on each island for the your stay on that island and then pack up non-perishables and maybe fruits and veggies for the next leg..

Linda is correct. You are best to shop on each island. Tortola has clamped down on what food you can bring in.

You definitely do want want to lug a bunch of groceries from island to island -- or show up at the Tortola ferry and have them refuse a lot of expensive food.

It would be cheaper to buy everything on STT, but it's not going to be so much cheaper to make it worth your while to schlep it all with you from island to island (if it's permitted in at all). I always like to save a buck, but for the hassle involved, the amount I'd save wouldn't make it worth it for me.

Thanks everyone! I figured it would be a hassle to lug all of that everywhere, but I just wanted to check. Can we stock up on water, cereal, bread, etc. (no fruit, meat, etc.) on St. Thomas and carry that with us to all the islands?

Water weighs over 7 lbs. a gallon -- and is easily available on any island you go to.

You have to declare food in the BVI and they can confiscate it or charge you duty. Also, we have had meats confiscated in St John when returning from the BVI. I would not carry food. Support each local economy! 😉

You should purchase them on each island. It is a hassle to transport them. They made be more expensive on the other islands but it will be so worth it in the end to not have to deal carrying everything.

Just don't deal with the hassle of lugging food around. Buy when you need it.

Thanks everybody. I guess the small amount that I may save is just not worth the hassle of lugging it from island to island. I appreciate your help.:$)
