Has anyone had experience driving in St. Thomas with a portable navigation system, do the car rental offices have them for rent?
I have my own personal one....which is for driving and walking! It works great. I use for longitudes and latitude coordinates a lot. I'm a local cant' help you out on the car rental places.

My wife came down a couple of weeks before I did. In light of the fact that she had never driven (it was always my duty) in the islands I programed my GPS with all the points of interest she needed to go to ahead of time. That way it was one less thing she needed to worry about while getting used to the driving aspect. It worked great although I did notice when I finally got here that there aren't many of the local businesses entered into the data base (but it tells you of places to go in PR). As for the rental agencies, I don't know if they have them or not.
What brand were you guys using?
Garmin works here. Avis rents them at the airport.
I got the Garmin 740.
