And a soon to be STJ traveler!!

We will be on STJ over Christmas this year, 9 nights, and can't wait. This will be our first visit, other than two daysails from STT to Honeymoon beach while in STT as cruise ship passengers. We are very excited to be able to come and stay for such a nice long visit. Although, we already know it will not be near long enough!!

We can't wait to hike, swim, boat, chill at our villa, and meet the lovely residents of the island.

Although, I do have to say, the one thing that I am not looking forward to is the driving. I am freaking out over the comments on the roads. I guess I'll just have to shut my eyes and hope for the best. LOL

Thank you all for the wonderful trip reports I've been reading. It really helps in all of our planning. And the pictures, they are stunning, from the sunrises to the sunsets, all of the beaches and of course the animals. Love the little donkeys!

Here's wishing you a great day,

Coden

Hi just got back from St Thomas and yes I drove on those crazy roads! Actually I'm usually a bit of a chicken and I thought it was great fun! Yes,the residents do drive fast, but if I felt pressured I just pulled over. I even took the car over on the car barge and had no problems at all. With the prices of taxis I was really glad we rented! Surprisingly the part I was most nervous about, driving on the left, was no problem!

ccamma1 - Thnx for the info. on driving. Okay - so if the cars back up behind me, pull over, let them pass. Got it!! : )

Now...driving on the Left, I think I can handle. Turning to the Left, I think I can handle. But how does one turn to the Right? I tried to practice on one of our country roads here in my county but they are very curvy themselves. I will have to remember to look through my right hand mirror. Egads!

Coden,

Turning right takes a bit of thinking for me when I'm down on STX. Usually, I'm not first in line so I just follow without any problem. I do get honked at from time to time for not going left on red.

I once got to daydreaming and made a left turn into the right lane like I would do at home. Turned right into the opposite lane! I snapped real quick but had to stop and back up and get back into the left lane. Everyone was friendly about it but it was a bit unnerving. Everytime we pass that intersection, my wife say's "That's where you almost got us killed!". We get a good laugh out of it.

Have a great trip and just go with the flow.

Kerry

I just got back this past Friday. I drove on St. Thomas, the car ferry and St. John! Will admit there were a few shaky moments when I scared-not by speed, but by the steep inclines and declines. It was great fun! Most drivers are on the look out for you-only several times did my husband say "Left, left!" :.)

I always practice at home first. A couple of weeks before our trip, I start driving on the left. At first, just up and down the street for a block or two. Then gradually I move on to the main roads. By the time we leave, we’re driving on the left everywhere we go. Yes, we get a lot of funny looks and hear some colorful language as other cars scramble to get out of the way. But no worries, mon! If you can handle a right turn from the left on a busy downtown intersection, you can handle anything the USVI can dish out.

Just keep thinking left shoulder to the left shoulder

Only problem I had is when I got back to the states. Went to the bank. Coming out of the parking lot got in the left lane. Drove to a stop sign. Turned left in the left lane and proceed down a fairly major road in the left lane. It was the truck coming at me when I realized that I was no longer in paradise.

Think Left (until you get back)

I'm on STX right now. Just this morning by Sunny Isle shopping center a lady pulled out of the parking lot heading right for me. She stopped quickly and tried to back up and almost backed into the car behind her. I'm sure she just had a mental lapse. I'm glad it was someone else this time. I got a preview of what some of the islanders see from time to time!
