My fiancee, who is afraid of the water, is reluctant to go on a day sail to the Baths - I really really really want to go. I think I came up with a compromise...

Has anyone gone by the ferry? If so, what can I expect when I get to Virgin Gorda? Do we have to take a taxi to the Baths area?
Is there little restaurants that we can get a quick bite to eat? I only saw 1 retaurant that looks more like dining - I don't want to spend my whole time in Gorda eating!!!

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

Marci

We took the ferry to Virgin Gorda last year. It made a stop at tortola and st. croix along the way. The ferry will drop you off at customs - make sure you have your drivers license & birth certificate or passport - then the taxi will take everyone to the baths. If I remember right there are 2 places to eat at the Baths. One is dining and the other is the snack bar at the beach. If you eat at the snack bar DO NOT get the hamburger! It was the worst thing I've ever tasted! The stray cats wouldn't even it eat!

The only problem with taking the ferry over is that once you get to the beach you'll only have a few hours until it's time to take the taxi back to the ferry. We took Limnos the year before and still only had a few hours at the Baths.

If you want to spend more time there you'll have to rent a private charter. Pricey!

If you do take the ferry plan on spending most of the day for this trip. It's well worth it though... the Baths is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen!

Leeko, you took a ferry from STT or STJ that stopped at St Croix along the way??? I've never heard of that.

Marci-

When I took the ferry, I recall clearning customs on Tortola, not VG. I also recall taking the taxi to the baths on VG, from the dock. It is a very short ride and VG is nothing like the other islands in terms of commercial traffic or scenery - it's very remote and the most traffic we encountered was from cows in the road. The rise is pleasant and pretty....and will give you a nice sense of life on Virgin Gorda, something the "direct charter" boat folks miss out on.

Your and your taxi driver can make plans for him to come back to get you at a specific time. The taxi drivers plan according to everyone's need to be back at the dock for the return ferry - and you can trust them to return when they say they will.

Yes, it stopped at St. Croix & Tortola - maybe they had something wierd going on that day, who knows. And we had to clear customs in virgin gorda right off the ferry dock.

Leeko-

St. Croix?? Really? That's 40 miles away from St. Thomas- a good hour each way. Which ferry company did you use?

Best,

I am sure she means She went from St. Thomas to St. John and then on to Tortola!

Leeko: I'm betting too that you stopped at St John, which is on the way to Tortola, rather than St Croix, which is the opposite direction! 😉 Hey, all these islands look alike from the ferry!! ! ROFL

Marci: I have to say I have never understood the idea of going on public transportation to Virgin Gorda. The ferries are stinky loud machines with signs all over that say "no eating-no drinking." On the other hand, on charter day trip, you will have a host(ess) fixing you rum punches or top-shelf cocktails (depending on the charter), pointing out places of interest, either fixing you a lunch or stopping at some exotic isle for a nice meal. Night and day experiences!

No, really, we stopped @ st croix. Yes, we did stop at St John also. We went to St John, St Croix, Tortola then Virgin Gorda. We took the ferry to Virgin Gorda that lives from Red Hook. Maybe that's why it took so stinking long and we only had a couple of hours at Virgin Gorda. Like I said maybe they were doing something wierd that day. But it was a looooong trip! A great time though!
