We are going to be in St Croix from Aug 14 thru Aug 19th and I would like to get over to St. John for a day, or perhaps Tortola if that is more convienent. What is the least expensive way of geting from St. Croix to St. John? Can we ferry our car to St. Thomas even though it is off season, then pick up the ferry and go to St. John.? Where do you suggest we go in St. John for the day? THANKS

No car ferry services the St. Croix-St. Thomas route. Perhaps you're taking about renting a car in St. Thomas? In essence you have two choices to get to St. John from St. Croix. Take a commuter plane from the airport in St. Croix to the airport in St. Thomas. (You can then pick your rental car up and drive to Red Hook where the car ferry takes you to St. John). Cape Air has flights and they generally run about $30 cheaper R/T than your other option, which is Seaborne Airlines; a seaplane service than runs from Christiansted to Charlotte Amalie. Seaborne's airfare on average runs about $130 R/T.

Once in St. Thomas you can catch a ferry from either Charlotte Amalie (no car ferry runs from CA) or Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John. Select the link "St. Thomas..Transportation" at the top of this page to find ferry schedules.

Can we take a plane directly from St Croix to St. John? Or can we go from St. Croix to Tortola either on plane or boat? Last time we were in the Virgin Islands we were not impressed with St. Thomas and would not want to return. Thanks Marsha

St John doesn't have an airport.

You can fly from St Croix to Tortola, but it is not a direct flight you have to go through San Juan.

Caribbean Sun has scheduled service. Total travel time 3 hours.

If you want to go by boat you will have to arrange a charter. A fast boat would take 1 1/2 to 2 hours for the trip. A real fast boat could do it in something less if you can stand the pounding.

Hello Marsha,

Contact the Seaplane and ask whether they have a St. Croix - BVI trip... I somewhat remember seeing a banner about service to the BVIs but I don't see anything about it on their web site. Call them and find out.

1-888-359-8687. Reservations hours are from 6:00am to 7:30pm AST Monday through Saturday and from 6:00am to 7:00pm AST on Sunday.

Seaborne doesn't fly to the BVI. However, they do have a deal with the Tortola Fast Ferry where you can fly from St. Croix to St. Thomas and transfer to a ferry from Charlotte Amalie to Road Town, Tortola. I am not sure if you can squeeze in a day trip to Tortola though. With the stop in St. Thomas, you'll find yourself with not THAT much time in Tortola.

Thanks Dominic,

I took a better look at the banner today and it does say BVI connection rather then being listed with the direct stops. A good option if you want to stay over on Tortola for a few days or vice versa St. Croix from Tortola.

Maybe I have a better idea. Just stay here on St. Croix and save the other islands for another time. I see that you will be in the USVI for six days. That's not too long. You could easily spend six weeks here and still find new things to do. You would save some money by just staying put here. Mellow out and slow down and make your vacation easier.

Get a rental car here. We have beautiful landscapes that you can see as you drive around-cattle ranches, sugar plantation ruins everywhere, mountains that you can climb, views of the sea, etc. We have the rainforest, Salt River, Point Udall, Whim Plantation and others, shopping in Christiansted, many restaurants, beaches-and some nice ones-that are often deserted, snorkling, scuba, and all the rest. You can spend an entire day at Buck Island. Many people haven't discovered this place. Why don't you help them discover it.

I see that you didn't like St. Thomas much. My guess is that it was too crowded for you. It's not like that here. Many parts of the island are remote. You would have them all to yourself.

Please read up on St. Croix. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have a great vacation.

i'd have to agree on this one. We just got back from St. John and we had our heart set on going to Tortola. We ended up staying only on St. John and adapted very quickly to island time. We found great things to do all 6 days and didn't even miss going to another island. It gives us a reason to come back to the USVI again one day. Can't say enough about actually staying on St. John. Paradise!!
