Hi!

I've been "lurking" on this board for a while now in anticipation of my trip to St. Croix in January....thanks for all the helpful info and recommendations - this board is GREAT!

My current question is about GLBT on St. Croix....are there any particular bars, restuarants, beaches, etc that you would recommend for a young (mid 20's & early 30's) lesbian couple? and is there any place that we shouldn't go or be "out" at?

Thanks,
Topaz

The Cormorant Beach Club is gay friendly. It's got the prettiest bar on the island.

Where not to go? No place particular, just the same places everyone should avoid.

The island is culturally pretty conservative. Very "live and let live", but still conservative. Just think small town USA in the 50's.

I was on STT and STJ a couple weeks ago, and I didn't notice any discrimantion based on age, color, race, appearance or sexual orientation. I noticed that many (but not all) of the local people were just rude to EVERYONE. But that's common to all places. I had the same feeling you did when I returned. Like "I'm here on vacation, spending lots of money, the least you could do is smile and say "thank you!" But when I returned to Carbondale,Illinois and I actually paid attention to the same behavior...it wasn't any different. The cashier at Wal-mart wore clothes that looked like he'd worn them to change the oil in his car, laying on his back in the driveway. The clerk at El Grecos Greek restaraunt didn't even say "hi" after I said a cherry "Hello!". He just grunted and scowled and the clerk at the convenience store was mad that I was interrupting her cell-phone conversation by actually wanting to pay for my cup of coffee! Unfortunately, common courtesy is no longer that commom. The people are the same, it's our problem that sometimes we have higher expectations because we're on vacation.

The Restaurant/Bar at the Hibiscus is called "H2O", in case you try to find it. It's on the north shore a few miles west of Christiansted and is just a little ways west along the beach from the Cormorant hotel and restaurant/bar.

Sand Castles on the Beach is at the far west end of the island south of downtown Frederiksted. The west end beaches are pretty and the sunsets are great this time of year. The west end beaches are pretty and the sunsets are great this time of year.

As different sectors of the island have their own flavor, I'd encourage you to drive around and check out lots of places.

I understand the customs I plan on moving to STX next yr we are very good about using good morning etc when ever we go any where or meet anyone this was a case where she was so drunk she could of cared less that we waited over two hours for our food then to have the server come and tell us they were out of our entrees. and this was after 9 pm after most STX establishments close I am in the food service industry I would never let a table sit two hours andthen tell them that the kitchen doesnt have thier food available anymore. and for a owner/manager to say thats too bad and to pay for your sodas and try us another night forget it.

I've had a couple of bad experiences with the restaurant at the Cormorant running out of food, as well. HOWEVER... the restaurant has just changed ownership and hopefully that will make such problems cease to be a problem.

The new restaurant at the Cormorant is "Elizabeth's". It was housed formerly in the Princesse Plaza mall across the street from Oscar's Refrigeration store on north shore road. They began operations out of the Cormorant about a month ago. I've been in once since then and the food was very good. We will go back.

you're welcome. Another piece of info is that the chef/owner of Elizabeth's used to be the head chef at The Galleon restaurant. He left to open Elizabeth's. The other main chef at The Galleon opened Cafe Bleu in Christiansted in the original Tutto Bene location in downtown. Both of these new restaurants opened a little more than a year ago. I am not sure how the food has fared at The Galleon since then. (OK, I went once since then and wasn't impressed, but it was at least edible.) I never object to going to Elizabeth's and Cafe Bleu, though. I did object to Cafe Bleu changing their core menu after being open for about 6-8 months. Changing the specials nightly is awesome. Changing the standards that you count on if the specials of the night aren't appealing is a bad move.
