Hi Group,

I'm heading to St. John in 5 months to spend 2 weeks in the wonderful Coral Bay Area. YIPPEE!!!

My problem is transportation. I'd like to rent a car (not a 4WD) for the 2 weeks in an effort to save $$$. Driving around the island shouldn't be a problem for me with a couple of exceptions.

The only time I really anticipate needing a 4WD is on the way out to the Lameshurs. The last time I was on St. John, a year and a half ago, I remember a section of the road to Lameshur that would be nearly impassible for a passenger car.

My question is, have they fixed the road out to Lameshur?

Would it be possible to drive there in a passenger car?

If it's not possible to drive there in a passenger car, would there be a taxi that would drive from the Calabash Boom area to Little Lameshur and return to pick me up? If so, what do you anticipate the price would be?

Finally, is there a place in the Coral Bay area to rent a 4WD for day trip?

Thanks for any advice,

John

The road to Lameshur is paved up and around the switchback and the rest of Lameshur road was recently graded. It's in prety good shape for now. You can make that in a 2WD as easily as some of the other steep hills around St. John, but a little bit of rain will make those same hills very slippery and a 2WD will not cut it. I'm not aware of any car rentals in Coral Bay. Mario's Taxi is based in Coral Bay (340-513-4681) so his (negotiable) rates would be less than a taxi based in Cruz Bay.

Brad,

Thank you for your reply. I will consider your advice that all hills in St. John are slippery in the rain and drive accordingly.

I'm from Seattle, so I'm pretty used to driving in pouring rain up and down steep hills, the difference is we do it on a 4 lane highway at 70 mph. Although admittedly, the roads in St. John seem more slipery than Seattle's.

Well, if you see me in the ditch in August feel free to laugh.

John
