I am in Houston and fly Continental. They have the craziest tickets for getting to SJU from here. I would have to fly to Newark, spend the night, then fly to STT. Not I! I can get a direct flight to SJU, but am looking for the most affordable way to make the 80 mile hop to STT (by boat?). Any suggetions?

Hi Houstonian,

I don't think that the ferry service between SJU and STT is running right now. Even if there was (or will be), I doubt that it would be daily service.

I would suggest checking airfares for SJU to STT on Travelocity, or Orbitz (or whatever travel website you prefer). There are several airlines (small and large) that fly this route.

One thing to keep in mind if you are trying to save some $$$ on travel:

Depending on what time your flight gets into SJU from Houston, you might still end up having to do an overnight -- and chances are that a hotel in SJU will be more expensive (on average) than a hotel in Newark.

So if you end up having to overnight in SJU, you might end spending more than you would by flying directly into STT, when you factor in the additional airfare from SJU to STT plus accommodations in Puerto Rico.

Good luck with your travel planning :)!

the good news, both american and cape air have several daily flights between sju and stt. the bad news is the fare appraoches $200 rt; over a dollar a mile, and the airlines are having financial difficulty?

We are on STJ from Houston right now. We were able to fly IAH-SJU on Continental, then added SJU-STT on American for $119 roundtrip. You can check your bags straight through to STT so you don't have to go to baggage claim in SJU.

Also wanted to add that the late flight from IAH gets in around 7pm in SJU and the last flight to STT leaves at 8:30pm, so you have plenty of time to make the connection. On the return we are leaving STT around 3pm to connect to a 4:40pm flight to IAH.

Hello,

We travel to STJ several times a year from Dallas. If you by chance have to stay the night in a hotel in route, my recommendation would be get to SJU. They have have a hotel at the airport, the price wasn't too bad. We have stayed the night there and took the first flight out in the morning, arriving to STT about 8:30. By arriving early, you avoid the crowds at the airport (STT was dead). You can get a car, and enjoy the day. If you are going to STJ, the ferry isn't crowded at that time either. Personnally, we try to always take the late flight out with an overnight stay in SJU.

Good luck and have an awesome trip.

Cape Air does a codeshare with Continental so you can book a ticket IAH-SJU-STT.
