Hey Everyone,

I can hardly contain my excitement and anticipation for my first USVI trip on Thursday!! We have everything pretty much lined up, but I have a quick question. When we arrive at the airport where can we pick up road maps and other important literature that may be helpful? And, what should we look for? Also, is it hard to navigate the islands?

Thanks for any help!!

Just outside the entryway into the airport in St. Thomas is the greeting desk, just past that and to the left is the baggage pickup area. As you enter that are there are a number of publications available, pick up one of each, and there should be maps of the island for your use. If you are renting a car they should have maps also. The only CAUTION i have for you is to remember to drive on the LEFT hand side of the road. REMEMBER DRIVE ON THE LEFT. for your own good.

As you walk to the luggage carousels, you will see a case fuilled with free maps, magazines, booklets, etc. that will more than fulfill your needs. Pick up a few different ones, like the yellow "St. Thomas/St. John This Week", Virgin Islands Playground, What to See/Do St. Thomas/St. John, Places to Explore, etc.. Taxis are plentiful and very easy to deal with. After you get your luggage , walk outside and you will find them lined up. Just tell the coordinator where you want to go and he will direct you to your cab. When you want to leave your hotel, just get in the first one you see and tell him where ya wanna go. There is a price guide in the yellow STT/STJ This Week magazine, to give you an idea of what the rates are...but they all follow the Taxi Association's recommended prices, so I wouldn't worry too much. Now, if you were to get a Gyspsie cab outside a bar...they may not follow the Taxi Assoc. guidlines...but, then again..they don't have a license to be a taxi anyway! Many people get a taxi that they like and call him exclusively all week...he kinda becomes your personal taxi...Mr. Nice Guy, comes to mind...Mr. Reliable, too...but there are many, many others...find one you like and give him a ring!

There aren't any maps in the magazine racks area as you walk in, but the info booth (which is really a time-share booth) has them and will be glad to share! Also the car rental agencies have maps! Sounds to me that you might be renting a car. If so, plan on getting lost, but not to worry, you will be just fine! Tip: if you need to ask for help, it is better to mention where you are going instead of route numbers as most of us really don't know them. (they came later, so we know actual road names). People are happy to offer help! Route signs aren't plentiful for some roads and some routes actually make turns, so if you go straight you will end up on another route, go figure!
Route 35 is a good example! If you go up from town, first you come to a T, turn left, this is marked, but them rt 35 turns right to go to Magen's Bay! If you go straight you will be on rt 40! You WILL get the hang of it tho and the map has it all marked out in colors!
A car really is the better way to go in my eyes! Enjoy! 🙂

Thank you everyone for the great advice!! One more day.....Wooo Hoooo!!!

We will be renting car and are looking forward to exploring the island. We don't mind getting lost, just as long as we can easily find our way back. I will be on the look out for all the good information at the airport.

To everyone in St. Thomas right now: I'll see you tomorrow....Save a banana daiquiri for me!! ;0)
