OK....gas just tipped over the $2.00 mark here. What are the prices like in St Thomas and St John? We rented a car for a week and was wonder how much money I need to bring to make Esso rich. Thanks.

Hello,

St. John gas prices were $2.20-$2.40 for 87 and $2.30-$2.44 for 93 when I was over there three weeks ago. The range is because I noted the prices at the station in Cruz Bay and also the one in Coral Bay. The one in Coral Bay had the lower prices.

At that same time on St. Thomas it was $2.33 for 87 and $2.36 for 93. Its up like 3O cents on St. Thomas now, so if you tack 30 cents to the St. John prices you can get an idea of where its at this week.

I believe much of the fuel for STT and STJ comes from Hovensa Refinery in STX. Keeping it in the 'family' helps hold down the prices. In addition, I do not think USVI has the same additive restrictions as mainland.

Actually the reason STX's gas is cheaper than the rest of us is because it comes from there. Our gas here comes from somewhere else, so someone's palm could be greased. Apparently they signed a contract way back when to get it from somewhere else so their relatives would get the kickbacks. Now it is just SOP. Silly, huh? ow much is gas on STX right now? $1?

STJ is such a small island that we don't use up very much gas. We probably spend more on sunblock than we do on gas.

Yep I'm serious 🙂 I know the Coral Bay station takes only cash or local checks and I think that is true of the other 2 stations in Cruz Bay also - please can someone verify this (if no one know's I'll check in 2 weeks when we are there - if you can wait that long)

They prefer cash, but I seem to remember the Cruz Bay Texaco taking my Visa card.

Hello,

The Cruz Bay station takes credit cards.

The attendant will pump the gas, you have to go inside the little office and pay, take the receipt back to the attendant. The area isn't very big so you have to pull off to the side to go inside and pay so others can pull in and fill up. Or so was my experience the couple times I've gotten gas there.

Gas is cheaper in St. Croix primarily because of course it's made there and secondly because 97% of the stations are independantly owned. Problem being in ST. Thomas is that the gas stations are 97% branded and their gas comes from Puerto Rico. It's the same gas from St. Croix but the different companies put in their additives to make it theirs, then they ship it to us in St. Thomas and it is then shipped to St. John. We only have a few owner operated stations here and they are priced cheaper. Problem is, they too have to get gas from Puerto Rico. The argument as to why it can't be shipped directly here is still very weak and the Commissioner or Licensing and Consumer Affairs is currently fighting for us to try and understand why.
They say the large tankers that go to PR can't come in here because they are too big, but can't explain why the same tanker that fits here that goes to PR can't go to St. Croix!
