OK, I know it has been 3 years since I lived in the VI, but when did the Divi Carina Bay Casino open? Furthermore, why is there only 1 casino in the VI? Is there talk of any others opening up? C'mon guys give me the scoop!

Yes, Divi is open. There is talk of one of the Jackson brothers building another casino, but the government is involved and you know how that goes.

Hi Ric,
Maybe I'm out of the loop. Who are the Jackson brothers, where are they planning on opening another casino, and how did they get the first opened if the gov't wasn't involoved in that?

Hello Scott,

Gambling is something fairly recent to the islands - that is why there isn't much of it.

Divi - I think it was opened around 1999...

There was lots of debate back and forth about casinos in the USVI with the government. Finally when the legislations were approved, Divi was first to jump at bulding and it went up. I recall when I was over there last year there was another casino property being advertised for construction, very close to Divi in fact...

Why aren't there others; because others haven't been built yet !! 🙂 And what is meant by government is involved - well approval from CZM, land permits, work permits, construction permits, perhaps talking to the right people, using the right construction companies, shaking the right hands, and getting through the government red tape that is involved when building something as large as a resort/casino and doing it all in the right way!

To answer Scott's question about the contemplated casino to be built by the Jackson brothers - the family in question is/was the Jackson Five. That's right, the gloved one's kin.

Scott,

Missed the Jackson question. Joanne thanks for answering 🙂 I recall Micheal coming down several years back and looking around, he had also looked on other islands - can't remember what he was planning to build - but I think decided against the plans. Again can't quite remember the details, but I remember the hipe.
