Hi, I'm planning a trip with my 8 year old daughter. Long story short, we were originally headed to Costa Rica and now need to change plans to a non-passport required for her location. She loves being around other kids, "mommy time" and wants to learn how to scuba dive. Advice on affordable, fun and safe?
Upscale or casual? For casual, Bolongo Bay is good, because it's on flat ground, so it's easier to keep track of your kids, and the beach is right there. They're pretty close to Coral World/Coki Beach which is a great area for kids. There are usually other kids there, too, because it's more affordable than say, The Ritz or Marriott.
I had a blast with my then 8 year old daughter at Maho Bay on St. John. I'd like to give Concordia a try. There are lots of kids there and you can walk to the beach. But, she loves staying in a private villa even more now that she is 11. My daughters also love horseback riding on St. John with Dana at Carolina Corral - 1-340-693-5778.
Cheers, RickG
In would go tothe best beach on STT, Sapphire Beach. The water is not rough, there are plenty of things to see, and it is close to everything.

PADI requires the diver to be at least 10: http://www.padi.com/padi/en/sd/whatsrequired.aspx
Maybe she could start with snorkeling??
Hi there - I have 3 children that have been going to the islands since they were tots - they are now all in their teens. We first started going to STT and staying right there at Sapphire Beach. Its a lovely beach. When we took a day trip over to STJ, we were hooked and begin renting villas at the Westin! Such a wise decision if you have children! My kids would wake up every morning and check out the daily itinerary as there is ALWAYS something going on! The pool & grounds are set up so mom can have a little peace while the kids are having a blast!! Even though my kids are older, they just love it there.....crab races, bobbing for sodas in the pool, free smoothies, free pops, movie night with popcorn, treasure hunts, iguana feedings & more. This is one resort that doesn't feel resorty or touristy - its just a great place!! I actually would suggest snorkeling over scuba - it easier, cheaper & super fun for younger ones. Mine started out with just a mask and a noodle to float on. The majority of snorkeling spots are beach accessible - walk right in! PS - rent a villa directly from an owner, not the Westin itself - much more affordable and with just you & your daughter, a studio villa would suffice!!
