I would like to send some fresh fruit with a friend who is visiting next week. Is it acceptable? Or, is there some funky law which not many people are aware of, and they'll make me throw my $35 worth of Harry & David pears away...? Thanks!

Send it, but send it express. If you send it via priority mail it may or may not arrive. i just had a priority mail package arrive after 35 days! Express mail has tracking and priority does not. I have never had a problem with fruits or plants. Several years ago I brought Bamboo in. i checked wi. customs. if you have any doubts check wi customs. they have the final say.
If it is coming direct from Harry& David it should be packed fine and survive the trip.

Are you sending WITH someone coming down? If so check with the airlines. I think it's ok, but it never hurts to ask.

Many mail order places will not send perishables here. Check with Harry and David if they do ship.

I have never had any problem with bringing vegetables or fruits back from the states to STT. I asked TSA at the airport the first time I did it and they said they were not concerned with vegetables or fruits leaving the states only coming into them.
