Look for the fishermen next to the little fruit stand opposite the old car ferry dock - they are usually there cutting their catch, (Friday was fresh Mahi Mahi)

maybe i got bad info, but in dec 05 captain of stormy petrel/pirates penny on trip to vir gorda told us local fish was toxic. something to do with the runoff/coral bleaching. he said starfish, bountiful feast and other good markets and resturants only offer imported fish. grouper at starfish was twice what choice steak was at starfish, thus made sense to me fish was not local!

anyone else heard anything. how about it islander?

Perhaps they were talking about certain types of Barracuda (reef vs. open water?) that I understand can sometimes be toxic.

Here is a link to an article on ciguatera:
http://www.whoi.edu/redtide/illness/ciguatera_fish_poisoning.html

Many stateside transplants will not touch reef fish because of it. Some fish fans gamble occasionally (small fish, don't eat the head, only from known fishermen, etc.) Many locals have had fish poisoning and keep eating it.
