I have been to st thomas on a cruise ship a couple of times. We are coming here sept 28 for a week at our timeshare at the marriott. I was wondering if we can use the local open air buses, or how much the taxis are? Should we rent a car? I heard the food is really expansive at the hotel i would just soon eat in town. Any suggestions?

We've stayed at the Marriott hotel at Frenchmans Reef a couple of times.

Yes - definately rent a car. You'll pick-up on the driving quickly and will be so happy to have the freedom. If you highlite the St. Thomas button at the top of the page, a drop-down menu will appear and taxi rates are shown there. Generally figure on $30 for each round-trip you take (fare plus tip).

Yes - restaurants are very typically resort-priced. There is a TON of information on this message board regarding restaurant recommendations - use the search button and look up some previous threads. All depends on what you want - from bar food through white table cloth experiences, ST. Thomas has them all (and most are really great).

Feel free to post another specific question on any particular type of restaurant you might want to learn more about.

Our favorites are:

Bar/Casual: Greenhouse, Duffy's, Shipwreck Tavern.
Seafood: Hook Line and Sinker
"Better Experience": Mafolie, Banana Tree Grille, Craig & Sally's.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

The Reef is on a peninsula and is not on the safari or bus route, so you will need a car. You can take the Reefer (water taxi) to the waterfront downtown and try: Bumpa's for breakfast and lunch, Cuzzin's for lunch or dinner. Coming this time of the year, you'll need to call ahead for dinner reservations, as several places are closed.

Rent a car for sure. Especially if you are staying at the Cove (timeshare). You will have your own parking place under cover and don't really have to worry about finding a spot upon returning.
