I know that the USVI is sometime a bit behind the states when it comes to hi-tech (I also know alot you like it that way!!), but does anyone know of any locations on Stt or stj that have free wi-fi. I have found a few places that charge about $15.00 per day, like the Crown Bay Marina, but I would like to avoid the charges, if possible.

9.95/day for Greenflash at Crown Bay.

No free wifi that I know of.

Contrary to popular belief, the Internet isn't "free" 😉

Most larger cities in the states have numerous cafes, etc. with free wi-fi to attract customers - and it works for everyone. It only costs one time $60.00 - $100.00 for the hardware to install a 200' radius system that will broadcast a broadband signal to anyone in the area with a wireless card in their laptop. So, your right, it isn't free, but the payoff for the business is well worth it.

Contrary to what some folks think, not all visiters to the USVI are loaded with money. I come down a couple of times a year and need to keep in contact with business back home. An extra $10.00 plus per day for two weeks adds up and having to go to a limited number of places to get the service is also inconvenient.

Someday the islands will catch on. Until then, I'll keep coming and be thankful for all they have to offer.

Andy B,

I appreciate that the setup for a wifi system isn't cost-prohibitive or complicated. What I was referring to was the actual monthly recurring charges for bandwidth- aka "the Internet" in people's minds.

If certain cafes or establishments have an agreement with their ISP that it's OK to rebroadcast, sell, or give away internet, fine.

I certainly don't think all visitors are "loaded with money"- if internet access is critical, go to a cafe- or rent a villa that has access- or stay at a hotel that has access (many do). There are lots of options.

My point was simply that SOMEONE has to pay for the "internet"- it's not free! Especially out here in the middle of the ocean- it's not like "America" where things are cheap and plentiful. It costs providers a lot of money to get connectivity out here to sell to their customers.

Just some insight from someone who lives here...and provides service.

Best,

LR

LR -

Thanks for the kind words. I guess my original question should have been, "has free wi-fi made it to the usvi yet." I realize now that the concept hasn't made it there yet. My guess is that in a couple of years it will. In the mean time I'll just use what is available.
